Code 39, windows cannot load driver

ASUS G75VW-DS7 / Win7 Home Premium / 64 bit / 12248 Megabytes Usable Installed Memory / solid state 128 GB primary drive /

I am trying to access and external HD (Lacie 301304U 1TB External Hard Disk - 1TB, USB 2.0), which was not a problem 2 weeks ago. It just doesn't show up. In device Mngr I get this: " cannot load the device driver for this hardware. The driver may be corrupted or missing. (Code 39) ".

I can see the Ext. HD fine on my other lap top.

I'd appreciate any ideas... repair, replace, update, magic.

First go through the steps shown on the laptop that is working properly (do not change anything). Then for comparison, look at the laptop that is not working. Do you see extra registry entries? If you do, remove the upper and lower filters.

I followed the directions. There was only one- 'lower filter'. Removed it and rebooted. Same error message. Other suggestions?
