    Hello,

I ran Combofix last night to clean up a redirect problem I was having. Every thing seemed to be working so I uninstalled Combofix and shut down my machine. When I started it today I found all of my documents and setting gone including my masters thesis. Needless to say I really need to get these files restored. Thanks in advance!

I followed all of the procedures and ran all of the scans in Windows XP Malware Removal/Cleaning Procedure. I have attached the logs to this message.

Please click Start, Run, and enter cmd and click OK. This will open a command prompt window. Enter the below commands at the command prompt each followed by the enter key. The bold black are commands. The purple is merely informational.

    • cd \MGtools <-- this changes to the MGtools folder and the prompt should change to C:\MGtools>
    • nwktst<-- this will try to run all one scan from MGtools. Tell me what error messages, if any, you see.
    • GetRunKey <-- this will try to run all one scan from MGtools. Tell me what error messages, if any, you see.
    • ShowNew <-- this will try to run all another scan from MGtools. Tell me what error messages, if any, you see.
    • analyse <-- this attempts to run HijackThis. Be sure to click the Accept button twice in the license agreement popup or it will just sit there and wait.
Now look for the C:\MGlogs.zip file and attach it no matter what happened while doing the above.

    nwktst - no errors
GetRunKey - "the system could not find the file specified.
    updating:runkeys.txt<188 bytes security><deflated 80%>
    ShowNew - no errors
    analyse - no errors

Before we continue I would like for you to use MSConfig to put this machine back into normal start up mode

    Delete these folders:
    C:\Documents and Settings\Khary\Local Settings\Application Data\AskToolbar
    C:\Documents and Settings\Khary\Local Settings\Application Data\Conduit

Still being redirected? :confused If so you need to tell me which browser(s) it affects.

I did as you asked and it seems to be working. I will keep an eye on it for a few days before saying the redirect is definitely cured. Thank you for the help it is really appreciated!

It seems that I still have the redirect problem, but it seems to only effect Firefox.

We are going to be uninstalling your old version of FireFox and installing the new version. (Except when you uninstall please use REVO Uninstaller!!! See further below for directions) So do the below to save bookmarks:

    Try Revo Uninstaller.
Choose the option on the bottom of the list (#4). Be very careful while deleting the bolded registry items ONLY!! This software will create a system restore point for you as well prior to uninstalling a software program.

    • Run FireFox and click Bookmarks.
    • Then select Organize Bootmarks.
    • Then on the next window click File and then select Export. Save the bookmarks.html file to your Desktop for later use in importing.

Now download and save the installer for the current version of FireFox but DO NOT install it yet. Get it here: Mozilla FireFox

You will need to exit FireFox now and use Internet Explorer to continue with the below until we reinstall FireFox.

Start by uninstalling FireFox and then reboot. Do not skip the reboot.
After reboot, delete the below folders:
    • C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox
    • C:\documents and settings\UserAccount\Application Data\Mozilla

where UserAccount is the actual user account name being used.

Now reinstall FireFox from the file previously downloaded.
Import your bookmarks file. (similar process to exporting).

    Redirect gone, or not yet?

Seems to have fixed it thanks for the help! Is there a thread about uninstalling all of the tools that needed to be downloaded?

If you are not having any other malware problems, it is time to do our final steps:
    1. We recommend you keep SUPERAntiSpyware and Malwarebytes Anti-Malware for scanning/removal of malware. Unless you purchase them, they provide no protection. They do not use any significant amount of resources ( except a little disk space ) until you run a scan.
    2. If we had you use ComboFix, uninstall ComboFix (This uninstall will only work as written if you installed ComboFix on your Desktop like we requested.)
      • Click START then RUN and enter the below into the run box and then click OK. Note the quotes are required
      • "%userprofile%\Desktop\combofix" /uninstall
        • Notes: The space between the combofix" and the /uninstall, it must be there.
        • This will uninstall ComboFix and also reset hidden files and folders settings back to Windows defaults.
    3. Go back to step 6 of the READ ME and renable your Disk Emulation software with Defogger if you had disabled it.
    4. Any other miscellaneous tools we may have had you install or download can be uninstalled and deleted.
    5. If we had you download any registry patches like fixme.reg or fixWLK.reg (or any others), you can delete these files now.
    6. If running Vista, it is time to make sure you have reenabled UAC by double clicking on the C:\MGtools\enableUAC.reg file and allowing it to be added to the registry.
    7. Go to add/remove programs and uninstall HijackThis.
    8. Goto the C:\MGtools folder and find the MGclean.bat file. Double click on this file to run this cleanup program that will remove files and folders
related to MGtools and some other items from our cleaning procedures.
    9. If you are running Win 7, Vista, Windows XP or Windows ME, do the below:
      • Refer to the cleaning procedures pointed to by step 7 of the READ ME
for your Window version and see the instructions to Disable System Restore which will flush your Restore Points.
      • Then reboot and Enable System Restore to create a new clean Restore Point.
    10. After doing the above, you should work thru the below link:
