Hi, I followed a post to run ComboFix and I think it worked, but now most of my icons for programs are gone from the Desktop and Start Menu. Although I haven't done a full test, it seems that all programs are working.

I have read many posts and can't figure out exactly how to dequarantine to restore the icons and it seems like a case-specific thing that requires the ComboFix log files from my machine. I didn't want to try messing with anything after reading many posts and trying to figure it out myself.

Can someone please help!? I have not done anything else since running ComboFix and have all log files, etc. I am running 32 bit Vista. Many thanks.

    Welcome to Major Geeks!

Combofix is not something you should be running unless an expert in malware removal specifically gives you instructions on how to use it. Instructions that are written for someone else should NEVER be used. All fixes in forums like this are specifically for the user who posted a problem in a particular thread.

    Attach the C:\ComboFix.txt log.

Also explain what problems you were having that prompted you to run ComboFix.

Thank you so much for responding. I see after the fact it is to be done only with supervision and I regret doing it now. I was following a guide to remove malware and it wasn't clear to me ComboFix should not be run without supervision.

My initial problem was high CPU and disk usage. I was monitoring resources and saw muzapp.exe was using a lot and research indicated it could be infected. It just seemed like I was infected with malware and wanted to do a thorough search and clean.

I have attached the log. Everything seems to work fine except all icons (except recycle bin, Internet Explorer, and Outlook) are gone from desktop and the Start/Programs menu. All the shortcuts and programs work if clicked but the icon for all of them just shows a little blank white page with the upper-right corner bent.

Thanks for any help you can offer.

Per this Combofix log it did not remove any of your icons. Are you sure that you only ran ComboFix and not something else in addition to it? Also did you run ComboFix more than once?

Try the below to see if it helps.

Please download and save the below to your Desktop or anywhere else you can find it ( if the Desktop is not showing )

    http://download.bleepingcomputer.com/grinler/unhide.exe

Now run it ( if you are running Vista or Win 7, use right click and select Run As Administrator ). Did that help with your missing items?

Also note that Grinler ( the creator of unhide.exe ) has the below link which gives info on restoring some system defaults when the unhide program

cannot find backups. Scroll down in the link:

Perhaps my description is misleading. I am not missing icons.

The problem is that for all shortcuts on my system, the icon for the shortcut is not displayed. Instead, a blank dog-eared page is displayed in place of the icon. The blue shortcut arrow is visible. This is the case for old and new shortcuts that I create. I can even go to Properties and Change Icon and it shows the one that should display and even though I select the right icon again and click Apply/Ok, the icon is never displayed.

This only happened after running ComboFix. Prior to running Combo Fix I ran Microsoft Security Essentials, Microsoft Malicious Software Tool, and Malware Anti-Malware. The shortcut icons all displayed prior to running ComboFix. After running ComboFix, I have the above issue.

I did run unhide.exe and followed the additional instructions by Grinler in the article. I also searched and ran "sfc /scannow" and also tried to reset the icon cache.db. Still the problem persists.

    Any ideas? Thanks again.

Have you tried doing a system restore to before the time you ran Combo?

Yes, I did. There were I believe 3 restore points available and I tried all 3. And all 3 times it said there was a problem.

It sounds like there is not going to be a fix. I may have to try a windows forum and see if someone can point me to where the shortcut icon functionality is controlled. I suspect there is a registry entry that is corrupted.

Okay then this is not a malware problem. It sounds like you have a broken file association for .lnk files. You may be able to fix this with a registry patch or by doing the fix manually which is a little more complex.

Here is how to do the registry patch.
    1. Download and run the following registry fix to restore the default behavior for .lnk extension.
Restore default .LNK behavior for Windows XP users:
.LNK REGISTRY FIX FOR WINDOWS XP (This link will automatically download the registry fix for Windows XP users)
Restore default .LNK behavior for Windows Vista and 7 users:
.LNK REGISTRY FIX FOR WINDOWS 7 and VISTA (This link will automatically download the registry fix for Windows Vista and 7 users)
    2. Double-click on the downloaded file and allow the prompt from the Registry Editor.
    3. Restart your machine.
