Combofix hung during cleaning

    Hi,

XP SP 2, followed read me first, got through all scans cleaning a host of malware. At the combofix step, the system hung for hours, not proceeding any further. After a reboot, the system gets to the desktop, but there are no desktop icons and no task bar. The same happens in safe mode.

Are there ways to recover from this?

    Thanks.

Does pressing CTRL-ALT-DEL bring up Task Manager?

If yes, click File, New Task (Run...) and enter explorer.exe and click OK. Does that load the desktop.

If not try File, New Task (Run...) and enter iexplore.exe and click OK. Does that bring up Internet Explorer.

Also can you boot in Safe Mode with Command Prompt and get to a command prompt screen?

    Chaslang,

    Thanks so much for responding.

Yes, Ctl-Alt-Del does bring up the task manager, and yes, File-New Task (Run) and entering explorer.exe does bring up the desktop icons, taskbar, etc.

    Very cool. Didn't know that.

What is my next step? How should I proceed to get things going smoothly?

Thanks again for your help and for your insight.

Once you get your Desktop up, attach the logs from SUPERAntiSpyware and Malwarebytes. Check to see if a c:\combofix.txt log exists. If it does then attach it. Do not run ComboFix again.

Then skip to running MGtools as requested in the READ & RUN ME and attach the log from it.

    OK. Thanks.

Here are the logs that were created. There are 3 SAS logs because SAS hung while running as well, and I had to get creative to remove anything. I had to stop the scan before it hit the point where it hangs and remove the problems that it found until I could get it to run to the end.

    Thanks again.

You do not have the current version of ComboFix on your Desktop and you should not be renaming it.

    Please delete the below files
    C:\Documents and Settings\jason\Desktop\cmbc915.txt
    C:\Documents and Settings\jason\Desktop\Combf456.exe
    C:\WINDOWS\system32\CF14308.exe
    C:\WINDOWS\system32\CF14468.exe

    Now delete the below folders
    C:\Cf
    C:\Combf456

What is the below on your Desktop? If unknown, delete them. If known, move them somewhere else as they don't belong here.
    Code:
     "C:\Documents and Settings\jason\Desktop\"
    MIC3PR~1 May 5 2008 "mic3pr4654577271"
    mic3pr~1.rar May 5 2008 410281948 "mic3pr4654577271.rar"

Now you need to uninstall Security Solutions Antivirus 8.5 which is not protecting you since Clam is only a scanner and has no active protection. Some of your Windows system files have become infected which could potentially mean you may need to reinstall. We will attempt to fix the ones we can see but we are not able to see more than a few out of thousands.

Now donwload the current version of Combofix to your Desktop and do not rename it. Download it from here: combofix.exe Do not run it yet.

Please put a copy of the below file into a ZIP file and attach it to your next message
    C:\Qoobox\Quarantine\C\WINDOWS\system32\init32.exe.vir

I think it could be a valid replacement for your Win XP SP2 userinit.exe file that the infection renamed to make it look like malware. Your current userinit.exe file is infected. I see a copy of userinit.exe from Win XP SP3. Did you at some point try to update to SP3 and have it fail?

I need to get the answers to the above questions and get that ZIP file before I can continue.

    Thank you, Chaslang.

As before, this is not my PC - it belongs to a friend who asked me to help him. I did get the answers to your questions from him.

First, I did delete the files and folders as instructed.

The two desktop files in question, he is not sure what they are, so I moved them to another folder on the C: drive.

    I uninstalled Security Solutions Antivirus.

I downloaded Combofix from the link that you suggested (BTW, the version of combofix that I downloaded previously was the current version available on the MG site at the time) this time I didn't rename it, nor have I run it yet.

As far as the XP3 upgrade is concerned, he does not know of any upgrade. It may be that someone else may have attempted it for him but he doesn't know for certain.

I have attached the requested file in a zip.

Thanks again so much for your help.

Run this Disable/Remove Windows Messenger to remove Windows Messenger. Do not confuse Windows Messenger with MSN Messenger because they are not the same. Windows Messenger is a frequent cause of popups.

Run C:\MGtools\analyse.exe by double clicking on it (Note: if using Vista, don't double click, use right click and select Run As Administrator). This is really HijackThis (select Do a system scan only) and select the following lines but DO NOT CLICK FIX until you exit all browser sessions including the one you are reading in right now:

    O15 - Trusted Zone: *.gomyhit.com
    O15 - Trusted Zone: *.gomyhit.com (HKLM)

    After clicking Fix, exit HJT.

Now we need to use ComboFix to remove a bunch of malware files.
    • Make sure that combofix.exe that you downloaded while doing the READ & RUN ME is on your Desktop but Do not run it!
      • If it is not on your Desktop, the below will not work.
    • Also make sure you have shut down all protection software (antivirus, antispyware...etc) or they may get in the way of allowing ComboFix to run properly.
    • Open Notepad and copy/paste the text in the below quote box into it:
    • Save the above as CFscript.txt and make sure you save it to the same location (should be on your Desktop) as ComboFix.exe
    • At this point, you MUST EXIT ALL BROWSERS NOW before continuing!
    • You should have both the ComboFix.exe and CFScript.txt icons on your Desktop.
    • Now use your mouse to drag CFscript.txt on top of ComboFix.exe
    • Follow the prompts.
    • When it finishes, a log will be produced named c:\combofix.txt
    • I will ask for this log below
    Note:

Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.

Now run Ccleaner to clean out only temp files and nothing else!

Now run the C:\MGtools\GetLogs.bat file by double clicking on it (Note: if using Vista, don't double click, use right click and select Run As Administrator).

    Then attach the below logs:
    • C:\ComboFix.txt
    • C:\MGlogs.zip
Make sure you tell me how things are working now!

    Thanks, Chaslang.

Everything appears fine now. Explorer starts at boot, and things look good.

You and the MGs always help a lot. I tell my friends to check out this site, but they seem content to have me do it for them. The only drawback for them is the turnover time, but they'd rather have me spend the time than for them to spend hours on the phone with tech support.

About windows messenger, how can one tell the difference between it and msn messenger?

    I've attached the requested logs.

Again, all is working well now. And thanks again.

You're welcome. One more thing to do and then final instructions.

Copy the bold text below to notepad. Save it as fixme.reg to your desktop. Be sure the "Save as" type is set to "all files" Once you have saved it double click it and allow it to merge with the registry.
Make sure that you tell me if you receive a success message about adding the above
to the registry. If you do not get a success message, it definitely did not work.

If you are not having any other malware problems, it is time to do our final steps and get your PC properly protected which is covered in step 10. DO NOT skip this step:
    1. We recommend you keep SUPERAntiSpyware and Malwarebytes Anti-Malware for scanning/removal of malware. Unless you purchase them, they provide no protection. They do not use any significant amount of resources ( except a little disk space ) until you run a scan.
    2. If we had you use ComboFix, uninstall ComboFix (This uninstall will only work as written if you installed ComboFix on your Desktop like we requested.)
      • Click START then RUN and enter the below into the run box and then click OK. Note the quotes are required
      • "%userprofile%\Desktop\combofix" /u
        • Notes: The space between the combofix" and the /u, it must be there.
        • This will uninstall ComboFix and also reset hidden files and folders settings back to Windows defaults.
      • Delete the C:\combofix folder from combofix (if it exists)
    3. Any other miscellaneous tools we may have had you install or download can be uninstalled and deleted.
    4. If we had you download any registry patches like fixme.reg or fixWLK.reg (or any others), you can delete these files now.
    5. If running Vista, it is time to make sure you have reenabled UAC by double clicking on the C:\MGtools\enableUAC.reg file and allowing it to be added to the registry.
    6. Go to add/remove programs and uninstall HijackThis.
    7. You can delete the C:\MGtools folder and the C:\MGtools.exe file. You can also delete the C:\MGlogs.zip
    8. If you are running Vista, Windows XP or Windows ME, do the below:
      • Refer to the cleaning procedures in step 3 the READ ME for your Window version and see the instructions to Disable System Restore which will flush your Restore Points.
      • Then reboot and Enable System Restore to create a new clean Restore Point.
    9. After doing the above, you should work thru the below link:
