I geuss I'm green or dumb.....Can Somebody please explain process on how can I copy any DVD, or any single segment/portion of a DVD.
Strctly For my own use. I wish to compile single segments/portions from different DVD's then finally compile/burn them all to a single DVD.
I not a neophyte with computers..but somehow I am missing the process....Fed up trying all these hyped over rated programs.

If you have store-bought movies that you want to back up for personal archiving, you'll need a program that will "rip" the disc to your haerd drive, removing the copy protections in the process. Keep in mind that most ripped movies will be over 6gb in size and will not fit on a standard DVD-R blank (they only hold about 4.3gb), you'll need to use DVD-DL (dual layer; about 8.5gb) blanks which cost quite a bit more. There are ways to shrink the movie to fit on a standard DVD-R but I'm not going to go into that here. There are MANY programs out there that will do the ripping and protection removal, some are free, most are not. Here's a few free ones:
DVD Fab (says it's $hareware, but the free version has full functionality; the paid version has extra features) http://www.majorgeeks.com/DVDFab_HD_Decrypter_d5168.html
    DVD43 http://www.majorgeeks.com/DVD43_d5940.html
    DVD Shrink http://www.majorgeeks.com/DVD_Shrink_d4020.html
    RipIt4Me http://www.majorgeeks.com/RipIt4Me_d5408.html
You can also look through the programs listed HERE for more ideas. These programs will copy the DVD to your hard drive with the protections removed. You can then burn them back to a blank DVD, or if you want to just copy certain scenes, you'd need to convert the movie to a format that can be easily edited, like to an AVI (DivX/XViD) format. You may not have to convert to AVI before editing, but that's how I've always done it. I'm sure there are programs available that allow you to edit the VOB files ripped from the DVD, but I've always converted the DVD files to AVI, then used something like VirtualDub or AVIDEMUX to cut/edit/join/splice the video. To convert from DVD format (VOB) to AVI format (DivX/XViD), you'll need one of these:
Auto Gordian Knot (aka AutoGK or AGK) http://www.majorgeeks.com/AutoGK_Auto_Gordian_Knot_d5795.html
    Catalencoder http://www.majorgeeks.com/Catalencoder_d5397.html
Like I said, once the movie has been converted to an AVI file, it's justy a matter of using a suitable editor to do whatever you need done. However, if you want to watch the finished product in your home DVD player, you'll need to convert it back to DVD format unless your DVD player can playback DivX files. To convert back to DVD, use DVD Flick. It's free and does the converting and the burning, and is easy to use, plus it has many more advanced features you can customize once you're more adept at wrangling DVD/AVI files. Be sure to have a blank disc in the drive before starting the conversion process:
    DVD Flick http://www.majorgeeks.com/DVD_Flick_d5530.html
FAVC (converts to DVD format but does not burn; creates a DVD folder to be burned with Nero or whatever) http://www.majorgeeks.com/FAVC_d5741.html
And here's some video editing programs:
    VirtualDub http://www.majorgeeks.com/VirtualDub__d5523.html
    AVIdemux http://www.majorgeeks.com/Avidemux__d5930.html
Tons of excellent multimedia tools -both free and $hareware- can be found HERE at Major Geeks. For more info, guides, and sites dedicated to all things video (and audio), check the following sites:

Good luck! I hope this helps!

(all the programs I mentioned are totally free to download and use; I have not necessarily used all of the programs mentioned, but I have used some of 'em, and they work great)

Many thanks for Valuable Info..I am aware of details relevant to type 9 & type 5 Dvd's regarding capacity. I have copied loads of DvDs with minimal problems.
Already have recent copy of DVD Shrink.(3.2) Been using Nero Ultimate 7 for some time. Also have ImageBurn (ripper) 2.4.20.
Using ImageBurn along with DVD Shrink as recomended on AfterDawn, following with attempts to break out single segements I went with DVD-Fab Platinum a highly hyped prog, supposedly designed to specificly to break out individual files in Custom mode.....It's just not working as expected. The (outscourced)support group is a joke....I geuss I will keep pounding the keyboard...Or may be take up Drinking heavy....TNXS DM:confused
