Hey, thank you so much for your Malware removal process. It really fixed up my computer and I am so gratetful! I just had one quick question. All my my desktop icons, administrativetools, stuff under my programs has disappeared from the main page. Is there any way to restore them? Thank you for all your help if I have any more problems with the computer I will post the logs.

    You're welcome.

You did not even tell us what version of Windows you are using so I will assume Vista or Win 7 and give some instructions more taylored for them.

You likely just need to change the attribytes of your files and folders. They have probably been changed by your infection to be Hidden. You can right click on the folder and select Properties and then change the Hidden attribute. Make sure you apply this to all subfolders too when asked. You may have many folders ( if not all ) that you need to do this to.

Also something else that may help could be doing the below.

Please click Start, All Program, Accessories and you will see ( among other things ) a Command Prompt entry.
    • Right click the Command Prompt entry and select Run As Administrator.
      • It is critical that you run it this way.
    • If you do this properly, a command prompt window will open with a title of Administrator Command Prompt.
    • Enter the below commands ( in bold black ) at the command prompt each followed by the enter key. Try each command!!!! The bold black are commands. The purple/brown is merely informational.
cd \ <-- this changes to the root folder and the prompt should change to C:\>
attrib -h -s * /S /D <-- this will try to remove the hidden and system attributes on all files and folder. Note there are spaces before -h, before -s, before * and before each /
attrib -h -s *.* /S /D <-- a redundant command match possibly other file names and folders due to using *.*

Let me know if this helps.

My computer is not giving me the option to run the command prompt as an administator right now -not really sure why. The system is actually a dell, running windows XP Home Edition (2002) with service pack 3. Can you tell me where to change the hidden option for my icons with this system? I looked around for a bit but didn't see it.

Well I did say the instructions were for Vista or Win 7 since you never told us what you were running. To open a command prompt in Win XP, just click Start, then Run and enter cmd into the Run box and click OK. Then continue with my instructions.

You can also change hidden attributes by right click on files or folders and selecting Properties. There you will see the check box to uncheck if it is checked.

Again, thanks for your time.... I realize you are not getting paid for this. I tried the command prompts as you suggested and also doing it manually. It did help with a few of the items as I can now access my documents and a few others things through the start menu. However, I am still having trouble getting my desktop icons and other accessory tools in the proper places.

    You're welcome.

Did you make sure that you entered the cd \ command first and did the command prompt change to show that you were in the root folder of your hard disk?

Please also run the below and let me know if it helps with your problems.

Thanks for all the advice. This is the first time I have been able to sit down in the past couple to days to try and run some of this stuff. I have tried all the suggestions so far with no luck at this point. If anyone has anything else for me to try lmk.

Please answer my questions. The commands and suggestions I have given you thus far should work. We have used them many times without a problem.

You also try the below and attach the logs so that we have more info:

In fact if you have run the most recent version of MGtools, there is a program in the C:\MGtools folder named FixAttr.bat that may help if you run it properly. For example, see how it helped the below user:

I finally had a chance to sit down and work on this issue again. I reran a couple of the scans again and the combo fix actually did the trick. I have posted all of my logs.... is there anything else I need to do? Thank you for all of your help.

Chaslang is away for a little while, so let's continue on:

    Registry Reviver
    <--- uninstall this.

Please go to virustotal and upload the following files for analysis, and let me know the results.

    c:\windows\system32\roboot.exe

    ------------------

Now we need to use ComboFix
    • Make sure that combofix.exe that you downloaded while doing the READ & RUN ME is on your Desktop but Do not run it!
      • If it is not on your Desktop, the below will not work.
    • Also make sure you have shut down all protection software (antivirus, antispyware...etc) or they may get in the way of allowing ComboFix to run properly.
    • If ComboFix tells you it needs to update to a new version, make sure you allow it to update.
    • Open Notepad and copy/paste the text in the below quote box. Ensure you scroll down to select ALL the lines:
    Code:
    KILLALL::

    File::
    C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\18472740
    C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\~18472740
    C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\~18472740r

    • Save the above as CFscript.txt and make sure you save it to the same location (should be on your Desktop) as ComboFix.exe
    • At this point, you MUST EXIT ALL BROWSERS NOW before continuing!
    • You should have both the ComboFix.exe and CFScript.txt icons on your Desktop.
    • Now use your mouse to drag CFscript.txt on top of ComboFix.exe

    • Follow the prompts.
    • When it finishes, a log will be produced named c:\combofix.txt
    • I will ask for this log below

    Note:

Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.

If after running Combofix you discover none of your programs will open up, and you recieve the following error: "Illegal operation attempted on a registry key that has been marked for deletion". Then the answer is to REBOOT the machine, and all will be corrected.

Now run the C:\MGtools\GetLogs.bat file by double clicking on it. (Right click and run as admin if using Vista or Windows7) Then attach the new C:\MGlogs.zip file that will be created by running this.

Let me know of any problems you may have encountered with the above instructions and also let me know how things are running now!
    Is all this corrected now?

Just about have everything you told me to do completed, but I can't finds the last MG Tools log you told me to run. I search my computer and it came up with nothing. Is there any way it might be under a different name?

Just run the C:\MGTools.exe again to produce a C:\MGlogs.zip :)

  13. runfromabear

    runfromabear Private First Class

Everything you ask me to do work as you said it would and all the icons and tools are back and seem to be working properly. The only thing I that is weird is that half on my computer screen is white and the other half is showing my selected background.

The scan you asked me to run on virus tools came up 0/41

Assuming there are no viruses in my logs can I delete all the programs I downloaded to try and clean up my computer or should I keep them on my computer?

    Java(TM) 6 Update 24 <--- uninstall outdated java.

    Download and run OTM.

Download OTM by Old Timer and save it to your Desktop.

    • Right-click OTM.exe And select " Run as administrator " to run it.
    • Paste the following code under the [IMG] area. Do not include the word Code.
    Code:
    :files
    C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\~18472740
    C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\~18472740r

    • Return to OTM, right click in the Paste List of Files/Folders to Move window (under the yellow bar) and choose Paste.
    • Push the large [IMG] button.
    • OTM may ask to reboot the machine. Please do so if asked.
    • Copy everything in the Results window (under the green bar), and paste it into notepad, save it as something appropriate and attach it into your next reply.

NOTE: If you are unable to copy/paste from this window (as will be the case if the machine was rebooted), open Notepad (Start->All Programs->Accessories->Notepad), click File->Open, in the File Name box enter *.log and press the Enter key, navigate to the C:\_OTM\MovedFiles folder, and open the newest .log file present, and attach the contents of that document back here in your next post.

Reboot your machine and install the most current and up to date version of Java available here at the below link:

    Java Runtime 6

Now run the C:\MGtools\GetLogs.bat file by double clicking on it. (Right click and run as admin if using Vista or Windows7) Then attach the new C:\MGlogs.zip file that will be created by running this.

Something to discuss in the software forum if you do not get it corrected as I am sure this is not malware related.

If you are not having any other malware problems, it is time to do our final steps:
    1. We recommend you keep SUPERAntiSpyware and Malwarebytes Anti-Malware for scanning/removal of malware. Unless you purchase them, they provide no protection. They do not use any significant amount of resources ( except a little disk space ) until you run a scan.
    2. If we had you use ComboFix, uninstall ComboFix (This uninstall will only work as written if you installed ComboFix on your Desktop like we requested.)
      • Click START then RUN and enter the below into the run box and then click OK. Note the quotes are required
      • "%userprofile%\Desktop\combofix" /uninstall
        • Notes: The space between the combofix" and the /uninstall, it must be there.
        • This will uninstall ComboFix and also reset hidden files and folders settings back to Windows defaults.
    3. Go back to step 6 of the READ ME and renable your Disk Emulation software with Defogger if you had disabled it.
    4. Any other miscellaneous tools we may have had you install or download can be uninstalled and deleted.
    5. If we had you download any registry patches like fixme.reg or fixWLK.reg (or any others), you can delete these files now.
    6. If running Vista, it is time to make sure you have reenabled UAC by double clicking on the C:\MGtools\enableUAC.reg file and allowing it to be added to the registry.
    7. Go to add/remove programs and uninstall HijackThis.
    8. Goto the C:\MGtools folder and find the MGclean.bat file. Double click on this file to run this cleanup program that will remove files and folders
related to MGtools and some other items from our cleaning procedures.
    9. If you are running Win 7, Vista, Windows XP or Windows ME, do the below:
      • Refer to the cleaning procedures pointed to by step 7 of the READ ME
for your Window version and see the instructions to Disable System Restore which will flush your Restore Points.
      • Then reboot and Enable System Restore to create a new clean Restore Point.
    10. After doing the above, you should work thru the below link:
