Thanks so much for the help! My logs are attached. We've had malware issues for quite some time that I'm beginning to realize were never successfully resolved (by friends trying to help)... I decided to try to fix the computer myself when we started having problems with hijacking, and I eventually found my way to you. :)

When I clicked the link to Malwarebytes Anti-Malware, I got a message from Firefox saying it "can't find the server." I tried all 3 links. So I wasn't able to download or run Malwarebytes.

When I clicked the link to RootRepeal, it took me to a white screen with Google in the upper left corner. It was blank except for a sentence that said "Click here to download attachment." B/c of the problems we've been having with hijacking, and b/c it looked so much different than the sites you linked me to for the other software, I was afraid to download it.

But I did download and run the other 3--hopefully correctly. Thanks again. :)

    Welcome to Major Geeks!

Go to TDSSKiller and Download TDSSKiller.zip to your Desktop
    • Extract its contents to your Desktop so that you have TDSSKiller.exe directly on your Desktop and not in any subfolder of the Desktop.
    • Click Start > Run and copy/paste the following bold command into Run box and hit Enter.
    "%userprofile%\Desktop\TDSSKiller.exe" -v
    • Follow the instructions to type in "delete" when it asks you what to do when if finds something.
    • When done, a log file should be created on your C: drive named something like TDSSKiller.2.1.1_27.12.2009_14.17.04_log.txt which is based on the program version # and date and time run. Please attach this log to your next reply. (See: HOW TO: Attach Items To Your Post )
Now run C:\MGtools\analyse.exe by double clicking on it (Note: if using Vista, don't double click, use right click and select Run As Administrator). This is really HijackThis (select Do a system scan only) and select the following lines but DO NOT CLICK FIX until you exit all browser sessions including the one you are reading in right now:

    R3 - URLSearchHook: (no name) - *{CFBFAE00-17A6-11D0-99CB-00C04FD64497} - (no file)
    R3 - URLSearchHook: (no name) - *{EF99BD32-C1FB-11D2-892F-0090271D4F88} - (no file)
    O2 - BHO: Skype add-on (mastermind) - {22BF413B-C6D2-4d91-82A9-A0F997BA588C} - C:\Program Files\Skype\Toolbars\Internet Explorer\SkypeIEPlugin.dll (file missing)
    O9 - Extra button: Skype - {77BF5300-1474-4EC7-9980-D32B190E9B07} - C:\Program Files\Skype\Toolbars\Internet Explorer\SkypeIEPlugin.dll (file missing)
    O9 - Extra button: (no name) - {CD67F990-D8E9-11d2-98FE-00C0F0318AFE} - (no file)
    O20 - Winlogon Notify: avgrsstarter - avgrsstx.dll (file missing)

    After clicking Fix, exit HJT.

Now we need to use ComboFix
    • Make sure that combofix.exe that you downloaded while doing the READ & RUN ME is on your Desktop but Do not run it!
      • If it is not on your Desktop, the below will not work.
    • Also make sure you have shut down all protection software (antivirus, antispyware...etc) or they may get in the way of allowing ComboFix to run properly.
    • If ComboFix tells you it has expired or need to be updated to a new version, make sure you allow it to update.
    • Open Notepad and copy/paste the text in the below quote box into it:
    • Save the above as CFscript.txt and make sure you save it to the same location (should be on your Desktop) as ComboFix.exe
    • At this point, you MUST EXIT ALL BROWSERS NOW before continuing!
    • You should have both the ComboFix.exe and CFScript.txt icons on your Desktop.
    • Now use your mouse to drag CFscript.txt on top of ComboFix.exe
    • Follow the prompts.
    • When it finishes, a log will be produced named c:\combofix.txt
    • I will ask for this log below
    Note:

Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.

Now run Ccleaner. Only use the Run Cleaner button. Do not run anything else on any other forms.

Now run the C:\MGtools\GetLogs.bat file by double clicking on it (Note: if using Vista, don't double click, use right click and select Run As Administrator).

    Then attach the below logs:
    • C:\ComboFix.txt
    • C:\MGlogs.zip
Make sure you tell me how things are working now!

Ok... thanks! I think I did everything correctly and uploaded all of the logs you need! Just in case it matters, when running ComboFix, I waited about 30 minutes for the computer to shut down and reboot, but I finally just held down the power button to shut it off myself. I hope that didn't mess anything up... it seemed to be fine afterward. The computer is running much faster (especially when booting) than before, but I first noticed that after the RUN ME FIRST downloads and scans...

Thanks again... this is great. :)

You're welcome. Your logs are clean.

If you are not having any other malware problems, it is time to do our final steps:
    1. We recommend you keep SUPERAntiSpyware and Malwarebytes Anti-Malware for scanning/removal of malware. Unless you purchase them, they provide no protection. They do not use any significant amount of resources ( except a little disk space ) until you run a scan.
    2. If we had you use ComboFix, uninstall ComboFix (This uninstall will only work as written if you installed ComboFix on your Desktop like we requested.)
      • Click START then RUN and enter the below into the run box and then click OK. Note the quotes are required
      • "%userprofile%\Desktop\combofix" /uninstall
        • Notes: The space between the combofix" and the /uninstall, it must be there.
        • This will uninstall ComboFix and also reset hidden files and folders settings back to Windows defaults.
    3. Go back to step 6 oof the READ ME and renable your Disk Emulation software with Defogger if you had disabled it.
    4. Any other miscellaneous tools we may have had you install or download can be uninstalled and deleted.
    5. If we had you download any registry patches like fixme.reg or fixWLK.reg (or any others), you can delete these files now.
    6. If running Vista, it is time to make sure you have reenabled UAC by double clicking on the C:\MGtools\enableUAC.reg file and allowing it to be added to the registry.
    7. Go to add/remove programs and uninstall HijackThis.
    8. Goto the C:\MGtools folder and find the MGclean.bat file. Double click on this file to run this cleanup program that will remove files and folders
related to MGtools and some other items from our cleaning procedures.
    9. If you are running Win 7, Vista, Windows XP or Windows ME, do the below:
      • Refer to the cleaning procedures pointed to by step 7 of the READ ME
for your Window version and see the instructions to Disable System Restore which will flush your Restore Points.
      • Then reboot and Enable System Restore to create a new clean Restore Point.
    10. After doing the above, you should work thru the below link:

Thanks again! I followed all of the instructions in the "How to Protect Yourself" thread--very helpful! I decided to uninstall AVG and install AntiVir instead, and it found 6 rootkit infections in the first, which I told it to remove. I'm attaching the log below. I really hope I didn't screw up by allowing household members to surf between the time you replied saying that my logs are clean and the time that I went through the "How to Protect Yourself" instructions... I had no idea how unprotected I was! Very sorry if I'm now taking more of your time b/c of it!

I also downloaded Outpost Firewall, Spyware Blaster, and I kept SUPERAntiSpyware. I've been getting several messages asking whether to block or allow actions by various programs, and I think these may be related to the new Firewall program: BLSLoader.exe is attempting to modify critical registry keys, BLSLoader.exe is requesting outbound connection, Adobe Photoshop is attempting to modify critical registry key, Services.exe is attempting to load kernel-mode driver or service... I clicked to block these, b/c I really had no idea what it was asking. Should I have done that?

    And 2 last questions:
I currently use K9 Web Protection to limit access to sites... is Glubble preferable to that?
Do I need to disable the Windows XP SP3 firewall?

    Thanks again!

    You're welcome.

These were items related added by the Sony/XCP DRM security software. This service is part of the digital rights management system utilized on certain Sony CDs. Removing this service, may cause you not to be able to play certain CDs from Sony on your computer. You will have to check it this became a problem or not for you. The whole world was up in arms about this more about 5 or more years ago and Sony eventually back off from doing this since the bad press was a killer.

Part of BellSouth ISP Internet_Tools. Did you install Bell South software on your PC.

Not really since you should know what applications you have installed and what processes they need to run. If you run into problems with Adobe or anything else you have block, you will have to unblock it in your firewall.

Better to ask for opinions in the Software Forum.

When you install a third part firewall ( like Outpost ) it will automatically disable the Windows Firewall since you should not have more than one.

Oh, ok. I'm learning... slowly! Thank you! I went back into Outpost Firewall and fixed the rules for those programs, so I think that's resolved. I do have Bellsouth tools downloaded since we get our DSL through them (well, now AT&T...)

I'm having a new problem that I maybe shouldn't be asking about here, but just in case... the Avira AntiVirus Personal --Free that I downloaded will not update. I checked to be sure that I hadn't blocked any of its activity on the firewall, and all activity is allowed for Avira. I thought maybe I should just download it again, but it stalls when I try to do that, and it won't even begin the download. Any ideas or suggestions about what might be wrong? Or can you point me to the right place to ask such questions?

You've been incredibly helpful... you guys provide a great service here! Thanks again!

    You're welcome.

Try uninstalling Avira. Then reboot your PC. Do not skip this reboot.

Then download and install this version: Avira AntiVir Personal - FREE Antivirus

Is the new version working okay.

Well, I removed Avira and rebooted the computer, but I couldn't get Avira to download. I followed the link from your reply, and I clicked "Download at MajorGeeks.com." The progress bar at the bottom shows that it's downloading, but it always times out. I tried 3 times. I get messages from AT&T about diagnosing my connectivity problems, but they say that the connectivity is fine and there must be a problem with the website... I'm confused!

Make sure you are not having issues due to Outpost Firewall. You can uninstall it to test.

I assume that you are using AT&T DSL and have a DSL modem? Do also have a router in between the modem and your PC? Or is the DSL modem also a router?

Do you have any problems downloading other large files?

Uninstall all Bell South software that you are no longer using?

Does your AT&T software have a builtin security suite? If so, you should not be using it if you want to use Avira.
