Computer boots but no further?

My girlfriends computer was working ok last night and was switched off properly after use.
This morning when she turned it on it booted up and came up as a blue screen and says something about a "windows protection error" and that windows did not load properly, please restat your computer. When she does this it gives her the usual options of starting in safe, normal and logged mode, if she presses normal she just gets returned to the error mesage, if she does the safe option it starts up in afe but then she can't access the internet.

Any ideas, she is running on windows ME.
