Computer boots fine; executables don't work

    Hey guys,

So an hour or two ago I was on my desktop when suddenly it restarted on its own. It restarted and booted fine, and allowed me to sign in to my account with no problems.

When the desktop loaded up, instead of the usual set of programs that automatically start popping up, nothing happened. My desktop looks fine, but nothing started. So, thinking something might be wrong I immediately attempted to run MalwareBytes and Ad-Aware -- but they wouldn't start up.

I had a problem like this before, where I had to get around a virus blocking MWB by downloading the installer and installing it again to run it, so I tried to open a browser to attempt that -- my browsers won't open.

Basically, none of my programs will open. I navigate to various folders on my computer, but I cannot run a program from any location.

I attempted to add a new administrator account to see if I could run various virus removal programs from it, but was unable to access the Add/Remove Accounts function, and had to add a new account via the command prompt and add it to the administrator groups the same way. When I logged into that account I found the same problem -- no programs are able to run.

When I attempt to run a program I receive no error or pop-up, they just simply do nothing.

Next I booted my computer into Safe Mode with Command Prompt, navigated to my MalwareBytes folder, and attempted to run it from safe mode using mbam.exe /fullscan and experienced the same problem. It accepted the command, but nothing actually ran.

Following that I attemped a system restore. The only restore point on file, even after checkmarking the expanded list, was a point from June 6th, two days ago. I restored to that point, the computer booted fine as usual, I logged in and was faced with the exact same situation -- unable to open a browser, unable to run any programs.

Finally, having logged back in to my normal account I ran sfc /scannow. Once that finished it said "Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files but was unable to fix some of them."

I cannot produce logs from MalwareBytes or Ad-Aware, as I cannot coerse the programs into running.

If anybody can help me deal with this issue, or have any suggestions for things I can try I would greatly appreciate it.

Sorry for the double post, I forgot to mention:

Running Windows 7 Home 64 bit.

File Association Fixes for Windows 7 Does the EXE file association fix work for you? Failing that..... try:

Please download and run the below tool named Rkill (courtesy of BleepingComputer.com) which may help allow other programs to run.
There are 4 different versions. If one of them won't run then download and try to run the other one.

Vista and Win7 users need to right click and choose Run as Administrator

You only need to get one of them to run, not all of them. You may get warnings from your antivirus about this tool, ignore them or shutdown your antivirus.
    1. Rkill.exe
    2. Rkill.com
    3. Rkill.scr
    4. Rkill.pif
Once you've gotten one of them to run then try to immediately run the following.

Download and save the below to your PC (save it anywhere you can find it. The Desktop is fine). Then double click on it to run it.

    AVPFind.bat

It should take a couple minutes to run. You will see a black command prompt window while it is running and it should close when it is finished. Once it finishes, attach the c:\avplog.txt file that is will hopefully create as long as the malware does not block the batch file from running. (See: HOW TO: Attach Items To Your Post )

    Now download and Run exeHelper
    • Please download exeHelper to your desktop.
    • Double-click on exeHelper.com to run the fix.
    • A black window should pop up, press any key to close once the fix is completed.
    • A log file named log.txt will be created in the directory where you ran exeHelper.com
    • Attach the log.txt file to your next message.
Note: If the window shows a message that says "Error deleting file", please re-run the program before posting a log - and post the two logs together (they will both be in the one file).

It does not. I downloaded it to an external HDD, put it on the afflicted computer's desktop, selected merge, and was hit with an error that reads "Cannot import C:\Users\Windows 7\Desktop\exe_fix_w7.reg: Not all data was successfully written to the registry. Some keys are open by the system or other processes."

edit: Trying those four additional things. Will respond momentarily.

    edit2:
    rkill.scr failed to run.
    rkill.exe failed to run.
    rkill.com failed to run.

link to rkill.pif delivers a 404 not found error.

Don't suppose you noted down which files exactly? Did it tell you?

I didn't try EXEHelper because your instructions were based on one of the rkill files working. I went ahead and just formatted the entire thing and installed a temporary Ubuntu OS. The loss of my files sucks, but I needed a working machine.

    Thanks anyway.
