Computer crashes while scanning for viruses

    I'm having problems with my computer crashing (not just a blue screen but complete shut down) while I run my Norton Virus scan. It gets almost done scanning then the computer completely shuts down and turns off. I'm kind of a dumb blonde when it comes to computers. Does anyone know what the problem could be?

    I guess that I should give you some info about my computer. I have a Compac Presario 2100, Athlon xp-m, with Windows XP and it's about 3 years old.
