Computer disconnects from internet after sleeping

Hi, I was hoping to ask for some help. When my desktop wakes from sleeping, it always takes a minute or so to connect to the internet. It starts up with a red x over the Internet Access icon, then it goes to the yellow caution symbol and then it finally connects. It's really annoying because you have to just sit there and wait for it to connect every time it starts up after sleeping. My laptop is connected via Ethernet cable to the same router and modem and it's instantly connected when it wakes so I don't think it's a hardware issue with the router/modem. Any ideas as to what could be the problem? Thanks a bunch for any help.

I have this problem on a little PC here at home running W7 using a USB network adapter. Always chalked it up to the adapter being flaky.

What OS are you using? Also, I tried, but I couldn't quite pick from your question/comments whether the affected PC (desktop) is connected via wifi or via ethernet...

    Hi

Sadly it is not an issue with hardware but more so the sleep option, don't think we have an option around this apart from making networking live permanently in Power Options (Wireless Adapter settings), then that will eat battery life.

Kind of think this is a recover from sleep option and I hate sleep and hibernation as they cause no end of issues. If desktop then have power options set to High Performance or check the options in Edit for setting various hardware to not turn off.

I have the same annoying problem with my laptop that's connected via ethernet to my modem when I come out of sleep in Vista or Standby in XP. The Broadcom card takes a little while to re-establish the connection.

I don't use wi-fi with the computer, but my Android phone takes a few seconds to re-establish it's wi-fi connection so, it could be something with how the modem needs to connect to other devices.

Thanks for the replies, it looks like I forgot to put a bunch of info in my post.

I'm using Win7 and the desktop is hooked up via Ethernet to the same router that my laptop is. The desktop used to wake from sleeping just fine but it just stopped all of the sudden. A couple things happened at around the same time as the problem started but it was a while back so I'm not even sure I remember all of it, plus I don't know if I noticed it right away so that kept me from pinpointing what the likely issue was. I think I installed Skype at around that time and also got a bad malware infection which caused me to have to eliminate the restore points prior to Skype being installed. The malware is gone and Skype is uninstalled, but like I say I wasn't able to do a system restore to a point prior to Skype being installed and I think Skype had previously dicked around with my laptop's sleep function b/c the laptop wouldn't go to sleep at all until Skype was removed so I don't know if Skype maybe changed some settings or what.

I also got a new modem at around that time because the old one went kaput but I don't know if it's the modem because my laptop works fine like it always did and it uses the same modem as the desktop. It's the phone company's modem and I called their tech support which is usually pretty good and they said they didn't think it was a modem issue, do you guys think it would be worth it to ask for a different modem and see if that changes anything?

    Thanks a bunch again,
    J

Maybe there are some left over remnants of Skype causing the problem. I know nothing about Revo Uninstaller, but maybe someone else could get you started with that program to remove any possible remaining elements of Skype.

Don't know about the modem, but there is a really great option for sleep mode here:

The cool thing about this program is that you can define for yourself the rules for standby. SmartPower is practically a religious thing to me using XP. I am fairly confident that you could use Skype and still have standby running SmartPower. It's very matter of fact about fulfilling its role. All in all, I only had to add about 8 programs to the programs list for sleep to work in XP for me...just media players, browsers, backup, defrag, and cleaners...

I was having a similar problem with a new Windows 7 machine when waking from sleep mode.
I had used the same modem and internet service on my Windows XP machine but never had this problem.

Since the Windows 7 machine is a home build and I have the proper driver, the first thing I did
was remove and then reinstall the network driver. You may not want to do that. Try these other
    things first.

    • open Device Manager, expand Network Adapters, right click your adapter and select Properties
    • select the Advanced tab and find Speed & Duplex in the Properties list.
    • the default value is Auto Negotiation (which was selected)
    • change the value to 100 Mbps Full Duplex

This may not apply to you.
I'm using OpenDNS. I found an error in the Internet Protocol (TCP/IPv4) DNS Server address properties.
Getting that properly set probably helped a lot.
    Setup OpenDNS

    Another suggestion:

    • open Device Manager, expand Network Adapters, right click your adapter and select Properties
    • select the Power Management tab
    • Uncheck both Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power
and Allow this device to wake the computer

    Hope this helps.
