I have an old Compaq computer that i am using temperally. Every once in a while it would lock, or freeze up. I would then have to hold the power butten down for it to restart. This happens most when i am, emptying my recycle bin, going into my computer, or accessing my hard drives through another program e.g word.

Also some times when i leave the computer for a while i will come back and see a black screen with a message "No operating system found".

I guess it restarted it self for some reason, and it is not booting from the hdd?

All i have to do is push the power button and it shuts down, then i can boot boot back up just fine.

Anyone have a clue to why this computer is doing this? The system specs are below:

    500 megahertz Intel Celeron
    32 kilobyte primary memory cache
    128 kilobyte secondary memory cache

    Board: Trigem Computer, Inc. Cognac
BIOS: Phoenix Technologies LTD 1.06 11/15/99

    384 Megabytes Installed Memory

    4G HDD
    10G HDD

    On board video

    120W PSU

    Win2000 SP4

    Thanks!

hmm got urself a tricky one there... in my opinion, i think the read write head is getting stuck or something... try running the computer with another hard disk, either that.. i had a problem were my computer wouldnt racognize my hard disk, and it wouldnt spin up, and it turned out i overheated it by restarting too much... i had too take the cover off, let it cool down, and it sarted fine... hope i was some help

    cheers

    Thanks

When i get the time i am going to try a differnt HDD. This computer doesnt really mean much..its just sorta a rental. I will have my box back up and running tomorrow.

As for over heating...i dont it is doing that...stock cooling w/ AS3 on the cpu...and 2 exhaust fans....Plus a celeron doesnt produce that much heat any way.

    Thanks

Your problem seems to be HDD related but just a quick check try pulling out your 256MB stick of RAM and see if that makes any difference. Does sound very much like HDD problems but there can be a few RAM issues with your MB
