Recently ive had this problem with my computer. when its turned on, it starts to freeze, and then automatically restarts the computer. Sometimes it takes a long time to be turned on again, or it doesnt turn on at all.
Im not sure if it was because of the time i disabled the NMIndexingsrv.exe service cos ever since i did, it started to become like this. ive enabled it again but it still does the same thing again.

    Thanks

Hi and welcome to Major Geeks!! :wave

What is the NMIndexingsrv.exe? I did a Google search and didn't find it.

Have you been into the Malware forum and run the First Steps "sticky"? I just wondered if that might be worth it, if that service you turned off isn't something that you know for sure is legitimate.

If it turns out to be malware, check the other "stickies" if you need to post for more help:

also, a windows process shouldn't make your computer not even turn on.. there are a few things to do...one is i would check your cpu temperature in the bios (if you can) there might be an option to view system health in the bios. also, you might want to check your memory with memtest
memtest is a bootable iso, which means you should be able to burn it to a cd and boot from it, or there is a link on that page to get the bootable floppy version. You also probably want to find the manufacturer of your hard drive (its not the same brand as a store bought computer, (it's usually seagate, maxtor, western digital, or others) and go to their website and get their hard drive diagnostic program which you can also boot from..

I second the memtest check. Bad memory or overheating are usually the culprits. On occasion you can fix memory problems by removing and reinserting the sticks a few times to rub and clean their contacts. Sometimes the connections can develop a little oxidation at the point of contact and moving them in and out will clean it off.

If you choose to run the memtest from boot, run the longer advanced check and let it do a couple passes at least.

I would also run a test on the hard drive using its manufacturers diagnostics. When a drive starts to go, the quicker you find the problem and replace the drive, the better chances you have of saving your data.

well i actually did that error checking option 2 days ago, but it always stops at stage 4 of 5 and doesnt move.
so now my computer wont turn on until the error checking process has completed.
ive tried turning on safe mode but it just loads some lines and doesnt turn on.

chookers: sorry i think it was NMindexsvr.exe

I have a feeling that it's your RAM that's causing the problem. How many sticks of RAM are there in your computer? If there are multiple sticks, you should test them one at a time to see what happens. If not, you would have to try and swap some RAM out of another computer.

well i remember i got 1GB of RAM added to my hardware. plus the original one in my computer, should be 2? not sure
so should i take out my RAM to test?

Just open up the case and see how many sticks you have in there.

Yes you should try them one by one and see what memtest says. Try them in different slots as well, because for some reason, sometimes slots break.

i took out the one that was added to my computer, and turned it on. it was really slow. i opened that memtest thing but it just opened up nero essential....it didnt restart though, just slow
so then i placed the 1GB RAM back into the computer and it seems fine...for now.
i will get back to you if my computer doesnt work again.
but is the memtest thing suppose to open nero essential?

ok this is the msg from the event viewer...

It works best if you run it at boot time. The reason why it opens Nero is because you are running the image and it needs to mount before you can use it.

I suggest you burn the image to the CD using Nero. If you don't know how to do that just ask, but it is not very hard.

If you use the CD during boot time before Windows boots up, it runs much faster. Since there is nothing wrong now, I guess you should be fine.
You might have seated the RAM incorrectly.

As for the error message, Microsoft says that you may not have configured it correctly. You could try and reinstall the program.

According to Google, NMindexstoresvr.exe is part of Nero, and it is responsible for taking a lot of CPU resources up, so you can completely disable that service if you want. It just makes it faster if you want to burn music or something.
