Computer freezing on startup (XP, HP PC)

My PC keeps freezing, either it freezes on the password entry screen or within a minute on the desktop. It's been doing this more and more frequently for 9 months now. I've done all the malware removal stuff and it didn't help. Please help me.

 

Step one of that article says to put in the Windows XP CD...I have no idea where that is.

If you have not found your XP disc, you could try
Start, run, type in
sfc /scannow,
(note the space after sfc)
and when the little box comes up to look for the disk, brouse to Windows, system, i386 folder, and it might just run the file check for you, if the files are not too corrupted in that folder.
