The problem started a few days ago. XP Computer booted up to desktop, but I could not click on any icon. Tried in SafeMode and same thing. Finally got it going by doing restore and installed Avast. (had ez trust antivirus running before) Ran scan and it picked up 31 infections. Cleaned it out and cut it off for the night. Today I have the same problem and I cannot restore as it says unable to restore.
This Computer is on a network with 3 other computers. I can look at the hard drive and see all files on the problem computer.
    Any advise will be appreciated.

    Thanks in advance

Welcome to MajorGeeks.com, please follow the steps below:

[IMG] Run ALL the steps in this Sticky thread READ & RUN ME FIRST Before Asking for Support

    • Make sure you check version numbers and get all updates.
[IMG] Very Important: Make sure you tell us the results from running the tutorial...was anything found? Were you unable to complete any of the scans?...Were you unable to download any of the tools?...Did you do the on-line scans as suggested? etc.

[IMG]After doing ALL of the above and you still have a problem, make sure you have booted to normal mode and run the steps in the below thread to properly use HijackThis and attach the log:

bjgarrick, thanks for the reply. However, since I cannot access the desktop in Safe or Normal Mode, I am unable to follow the "pre-steps" .
I can enter in Safe Mode with Command, so maybe that is where I can start?

First, disconnect from the internet by pulling the cable. What happens when you boot into either mode? If you can hit CONTROL + SHIFT + ESC to open task manager, then on the Applications tab click "New Process" and type explorer.exe and press enter. Tell me what happens!

After you do the above, try this. Click new process again and type in msconfig then press enter. Click "Selective Startup" and uncheck "Load startup items" click ok and reboot. See if you can now get into normal mode, if so procede with the READ ME.

Re: Computer froze at desktop- Virus? UPDATE

Well I followed all the instructions until I could no longer access the problem computer at all. Then I ran a scan from another computer on the network and problem computer became accessable again.
I still get Dlstoyle.j and Win32.Lospad.D being caught by my antivirus sofeware.
Anyone know how to get these pesky rascals out for good.??
