I had run AVG yesterday it said it found trojan SHeur.BID. But my computer keeps freezing before it finishes a scan. I can only be using it for so long until freeze so when ive tried scanning with things like housecall it never finishes. I went into safe mode and ran AVG, to my surprise it found nothing. I ran spybot, nothing. I ran AVG spy, adaware and CCleaner all in safe mode. But i dont know what to do next. It just keeps freezing, i cant even bring up the task manager when it happens. Please help thanks.

Welcome to MajorGeeks.com, please follow our standard cleaning procedures:

[IMG] Run ALL the steps in this Sticky thread READ & RUN ME FIRST Before Asking for Support

    • Make sure you check version numbers and get all updates.
[IMG] Very Important: Make sure you tell us the results from running the tutorial...was anything found? Were you unable to complete any of the scans?...Were you unable to download any of the tools?...Did you do the on-line scans as suggested? etc.

[IMG]After doing ALL of the above and you still have a problem, make sure you have booted to normal mode and run the steps in the below thread to properly use HijackThis and attach the log:

[IMG] Downloading, Installing, and Running HijackThis
    • Make sure you also rename HijackThis.exe as suggested in the procedures. Use analyse.exe for the new name. This is very important due to some new infections going around..
[IMG]When you return to make your next post, make sure you attach the following logs and that you have run these scans in the following order too:
    • CounterSpy
    • AVG Antispyware log - ONLY IF NEEDED you were not able to run CounterSpy
    • Bitdefender - from step 6
    • Panda Scan - from step 6
    • runkeys.txt - the log from GetRunKey.bat
    • newfiles.txt - the log from ShowNew.bat
    • HijackThis
NOTE: You can only attach 3 files in a single message so it will require that you use two messages to attach all of these logs!

Quick update computer seemed to be running fine most of today (about six hours) Just when i started to think i might have done some good it froze again. Then it froze three consecutive times after that. I reran counter spy, adaware and spy bot all say no threats found! Im pissed and puzzled.

Before you begin this fix please disable/close any antispy and anitvirus programs you have running so they will not block this fix.

Please look in Add/Remove Programs for the following and uninstall them if found:

    J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 4

    J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 10

Copy the contents of the below Quote Box to Notepad. Then click File and then Save As. Change the Save as Type to All Files. Name the file fixme.reg and then click save. (make sure you save it somewhere you can find it. Saving it to your Desktop may make that easy.) Then double-click on the fixme.reg file on your desktop (or locate it with Windows Explorer and double click on it if not saved to the Desktop) and when it prompts to Add in to the registry, say yes.

Next, run CCleaner to clean up cookies and temp files.

After you complete the above, REBOOT and proceed with the rest of this fix...

Next Reset Web Settings & Default Security Settings

    Note for IE 6 users:
    To Reset Web Settings:
Right click on your desktop Internet Explorer icon and select Properties. Then click the Programs tab and then click "Reset Web Settings". Now go back to the General tab and set your home page address to something useful like www.majorgeeks.com. Click Apply. Click Delete Cookies, Click Delete Files and select Delete all Offline content too, Click OK. When it finishes Click OK.

If you do not have an Internet Explorer icon on your Desktop, click Start, Control Panel (for some systems it may be Start, Settings, Control Panel), Internet Options, Programs tab and then click "Reset Web Settings". Now go back to the General tab and set your home page address to something useful like www.majorgeeks.com. Click Apply. Click Delete Cookies, Click Delete Files and select Delete all Offline content too, Click OK. When it finishes Click OK

    To Default Security Settings:
Right click on your desktop Internet Explorer icon and select Properties. Then click the Security Tab and click Default Level for Internet, Local Intranet, Trusted Sites, and Restricted Sites. For IE 7 users, simply click the "Reset all zones to default level" button.

    Note for IE 7 users:
Select Internet Options, then the Advanced Tab and then the Reset button under Reset Internet Explorer Settings.

Finally, I would like you to flush your System Restore points. Please follow the instructions in the below:

    • Disable and Re-enable System Restore

    • Turn OFF System Restore to flush any bad Restore Points.

    • Then, follow the instructions at the bottom of the linked page to Re-enable the Restore Utility which will create a fresh restore point.
After you complete the above reboot once more and then scan with HijackThis and attach the new log.

Let me know of any problems you may have encountered with the above instructions and also let me know how things are running now.

Ok i finished all you asked. Thanks for all your help. I will let you know if I get any freezing from here on out. Do you recommend me purchasing Registry Mechanic and CounterSpy? Right now im using all the free programs like: AVG antivirus, AdAware, SpyBot SD, Spyware Blaster, CCleaner, McAfee stinger and AVG Anti-Spyware. What you think? Do i need to set up a firewall as well? If so, can you recommend one? Thanks again for everything!

Personally, if you are going to purchase a Registry Cleaner I recommend RegSupreme Pro 1.4.0.48, however they are not required. CounterSpy is a good program but it also isnt required, they are free programs that do just as good such as the ones you are using.

These are fine, I would only use one or two because more then that will cause conflicts. I would recommend AVG AntiVirus, ZoneAlarm Firewall, SpywareBlaster and if you want to purchase one I would recommend Spy Sweeper or AVG AntiSpyware.

Yes, personally I use and recommend ZoneAlarm Free Edition.

You should see this article on How to Protect yourself from malware!

Let's do a few more scans just to rule out malware. This could be anything from software, malware to faulty hardware. ]

Attach a current GetRunKey and ShowNew logs along with the below log.

    Please download F-Secure's BlacklightBeta
    • Download fsbl.exe and save it to the Desktop.
    • Once saved... double click fsbl.exe to install the program.
    • Click accept agreement and Click scan
    • This application may trigger a warning from your antivirus. Let the driver load. Wait for it to finish.
    • If it displays any items...don't do anything with them yet. Just hit exit (close)
    • It will drop a log on Desktop that starts with fsbl....big number
    Please attach the BlackLight log.

Thanks for being patient and courteous with your help. I never even thought it could be a hardware issue. I use PDMarq Recorder and Bladeenc. MP3 Encoder every day to record favorite sirus show. Now the Bladeenc doesnt work says:
    Run-Time Error '62':
    input past end of file

Have no idea what this means been using it for over two years now having problem, anyway here are the logs.

This doesn't appear to be anything malware related. I would post this in the Hardware maybe even Software Forum because I don't think it malware related. Like I said this could be anything, there are several things that can cause a computer to freeze.

Also, we removed the below entries and should not have, simply follow the below to add them back.

Copy the contents of the below Quote Box to Notepad. Then click File and then Save As. Change the Save as Type to All Files. Name the file fixme1.reg and then click save. (make sure you save it somewhere you can find it. Saving it to your Desktop may make that easy.) Then double-click on the fixme1.reg file on your desktop (or locate it with Windows Explorer and double click on it if not saved to the Desktop) and when it prompts to Add in to the registry, say yes.

Why on startup does counterspy ask me about motive~1.exe? is this a normal thing?

  16. bjgarrick

bjgarrick MajorGeeks Admin - Malware Expert

Is it asking to allow it to startup or what is it requesting?

The file "motive~1.exe" appears to be part of Motive Communications which is legit.

Yes its asking me to allow it. ALso the registry wouldnt input. It said that its not correct script and can only take binary registry files to the editor.

Are you removing the entry? Is it coming back?

When i tried to input the fix1.reg you suggested it didnt work. Gave me an error message. Thats what i was saying.

If you installed CounterSpy during the READ ME you can go ahead and uninstall it and any other tools we used. Try the reg fix again and then reboot.

Are you still having the freezing problem? If so, I would go ahead and post it in the Software/Hardware Forum because I don't personally belive it's malware related.

Have you recently installed any new drivers and/or hardware?
