Computer locks up for 5 minutes at a time

My computer has been locking up for 5 minutes at a time a few times a day.

The harddrive sounds like it's running a marathon, and I can't do anything -- even my clock stops. After 5 minutes or so, it slowly unlocks, and I can resume what I was doing.

I'm posting this in the Malware Forum, because this started happening about 10 days ago . . . after I clicked on a link from friend in myspace. When asked to enter my password, I thought myspace was just being buggy. (I know, I know, I'll never drink and surf again.) Then she emailed me a few days later to tell me that she'd been hacked. Then a few of my friends got emails with bad links. I've changed my password, and the bad emails have stopped being sent from my account, but my computer is still doing this locking up thing!

    Help!

    Meredith

ps. I ran the AVG spyware program, and changed the settings to save a report after all scans, even if no threats present, but after I ran it, it said "No Reports Available." ?? It only found 3 cookies . . . .

You have both AVG Anti-virus and Norton installed..which is a no no ....please uninstall AVG Anti-virus...(or Norton - unless you have a paid subscription).

Please use add/remove programs to uninstall:
Java 2 Runtime Environment, SE v1.4.2_03

    Reboot and install:
    Java Runtime 6

    Now:
Please copy the bold text below to notepad. Save it as fixME.reg to your desktop. Be sure the "Save as" type is set to "all files" Once you have saved it double click it and allow it to merge with the registry.

I'm not seeing any malware ...so tell me if you are still having problems.

Ok, I waited a day or two to see what my computer would do.

    Good news and bad news.

First -- good news -- my computer seems to be running faster, so thank you for that.

Bad news -- my computer is still locking up. It isn't locking up for as long - the last two times have only been for about 2 minutes instead of 5, so it's better, but . . .

Again, the computer sounds like it's working really hard, and it freezes so I can't do anything. It isn't freezing for as long as it was before, but still freezing.

Do you have any more ideas? This freaks me out a bit, because it's never done this before . . .

Attaching fresh logs. I appreciate your help!

Please disconnect your computer from the internet altogether by disconnecting the cable and then try disabling everything to do with Nortons. See what that does. Then be sure to re-enable your antivirus and security suite before you reconnect your cable to the internet.

Run HJT and have it fix this item:
    R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Start Page = about:blank
This should have been handled when we reset your IE settings unless Norton blocked it!

How many times did you install Norton?

    Ok,

You're going to have to give me a link to HJT, I can't find it. And fix WHAT? HOW?? I'm sorry, but I need some hand-holding here.

What do you mean how many times did I download Norton? I only downloaded it once!? Then, once a year it makes me pay to keep it, and it downloads again, I guess. I've had this computer about three years.

Run C:\MGtools\analyse.exe by double clicking on it. This is really HijackThis (select Do a system scan only) and select the following lines but DO NOT CLICK FIX until you exit all browser sessions including the one you are reading in right now:
    After clicking Fix, exit HJT.

As Abri stated ...get off the web and disable all your security software and then see if you lock up ....otherwise you need to post in the software section as this is not malware related.

I am so, so sorry, but I don't know what I'm doing! You really have to explain things to me.
I found this: C:\MGtools\analyse.exe, and double clicked it, and ran it.

But, there was no "fix" to click! I don't know what you mean?! It told me to click any key to continue, then disappeared. Period. The end. ???

And I would love to disable, then reenable my virus stuff, but I don't know how to do that. I only paid to re-up my 2005 Norton Subsciption, and NOT ONLY does my computer not recognize that I'm protected (but I am . . . 4 hours on their stupid support website brought me to a guy who told me that I'll just see the "You're not protected" red X on the bottom right forever, but ignore that, 'cuz the computer is protected, it just doesn't register that it is. -- ?!! But I wouldn't know how to re-put-it-back once I figured out how to delete it . . .

    Sorry, frustrated.

But thank you for telling me what forum to post in if this stuff doesn't work, (once I figure out how to do it.) I had no idea where to go next . . .

I don't want you to delete it ....in your system tray is the icon for norton ...right click that and choose disable. Then see if you still lock up.
If you don't then re-enable and let us know.
