Computer only boots to XP Safe mode.....

Friend's computer boots up in Safe Mode. He has XP Home and has no disks available, is there anyway to restore to yesterday's settings?

Think it was hit by a virus, beware of any email with the subject BAGGS

 

You should be able to go to "Start"->"Run" and type "msconfig". This has the option to roll back to a previous date.

 

It rolled back ok, but it's still starting in SAFE mode. Any ideas?

 

Does it attempt to boot into normal mode or just constantly into safe mode. Any Error Messages?

I might suggest opening a DOS prompt in "Run" type "command", and type "chkdsk /r" into the DOS prompt.

 

Constantly in Safe Mode. Friend thinks that the virus is trying to load something that the system doesn't like.

 

Well to remove items from startup you Run the command "msconfig" and look in the startup tab. If you want a copy of the boot cd they make a floppy version, takes about 6 floppies.

With these you have the option of repairing the boot configuration "fixmbr" and "fixboot"

The "chkdsk /r" command can also be run from these discs as well as the DOS prompt. I still suggest this course of action due to its availability to repair damaged Windows System files. This is XP's version of scandisk.
