    Hello,
    I built my computer 13 months ago and all was fine until mid-December(2010).
    Specs:
    • Windows 7 Home Premium 32bit
    • 2gb ram
    • AMD Phenom II x4 925 2.8GHz
    • ATI Radeon HD 4850
    I use Firefox as my browser and Comodo IS Premium as my firewall.
    I also regularly use Malwarebytes, SuperAntiSpyware, Spybot S&D, Spyware Doctor, and until recently AVG
    I admit that I do obtain some of my programs through illicit means (utorrent + piratebay), but I will comply with any requests to remove these programs.

    After having visited a less than savory site, I began experiencing a multitude of problems. Almost immediately I began having random popups and using my google searchbar would redirect me to sites not related to my search. In addition, random audio ads would begin playing even if my browser wasn't open.

    Another issue that arose was various programs failing to load. Some of the items I have pinned to my taskbar would refuse to initialize (firefox, iTunes, explorer, etc.) and a few of my games were unresponsive too. I religiously use my task manager, so I noticed that the "dud" initializations were processes that failed to get above a certain "memory used" kb amount. I would terminate the duds and repeatedly re-initialize in order to get the programs started. Sometimes it would take many attempts, and sometimes they simply wouldn't start, prompting me to reinstall (to no avail).

    Not only this, but I haven't been able to update Windows since 12/22/10 (about the time all the problems started). Not only does my computer pester me about updating my Windows (every time I attempt to nothing happens), but when I visit the Microsoft Update site manually I'm unable to connect (every other page works fine, more or less).
    This is the error code I get when I try to update through the action center:
    Code:
    Code 80072EFE
    In addition to all this my computer had been having trouble booting. One out of every three startups ended in failure (I get a black screen after waiting a considerable time of logging in to my account). The other third of the time it ends up being ridiculously slow, and the final third acts as if there are no problems at all.
    Also, about once or twice a week my computer randomly crashes (bluescreen) and forces a restart.

    Within the first week of having problems I exhaustively scanned my computer with all the resources at my disposal (MB, SAS, SB-S&D and at the time AVG). I also went and got a firewall (until that time I hadn't used any). First I used Online Armor, with which I was dissatisfied, and then got Comodo Internet Security (which I am only marginally more pleased with. If you can suggest a better firewall suite I would greatly appreciate it). I also went through add/remove programs to get rid of any suspicious programs, in addition to manually checking the contents of all my partitions for any suspicious folders. I remember 2 that stuck out were Whitesmoke and Zalman Frisbee, in addition to a few poser "anti"malware programs.

    I managed to eliminate some of the problems: random popups and audio ads were gone, got some response out of the searchbar (though it was far from perfect), and marginally improved booting (only 1 in 5-6 startups was a failure now). I adapted to the problems that persisted (programs failing to initialize, inability to update Windows, and the few crashes/fail boots) and decided to leave fully cleaning my computer for another time.

    Things were "fine" till a few days ago when most of the problems returned in full force and my computer began to crash more frequently. Again, I ran a battery of scans and removed all the infections I could find, but my computer was still having problems. I got fed up and last night I found this site and began to follow all procedures to clean my computer of this damned infestation.

    I began with the Read & Run Me First and followed all the steps. Step 6 gave me particular trouble as DeFogger caused my computer to crash, so instead I manually uninstalled and deleted both Alcohol 120 and Daemon Tools.

    Going through the Vista Malware Removal/Cleaning Procedure was a bit more problematic. Essentially the only programs on that list that worked were the ones I already had (MB and SAS, and both turned up next to nothing). Both ComboFix and MGTools caused my computer to crash, and RootRepeal gave me errors every time I tired to run it. I have Combofix and MGtools crash reports written down in case you want them and the RootRepeal error code is as follows
    Code:
    Error: FOPS-DeviceIOControl
    0xc0000024
    0x0000011c
    Because of the Crashes I am unable to provide logs for ComboFix and MGtools and can only provide an error log for RootRepeal.

    I greatly appreciate any help you can provide and will be eternally grateful if you can fix this problem of mine.

    Re: Computer Plagued with a myriad of problems, haven't been able to solve any of the

    Go to TDSSKiller and Download TDSSKiller.zip to your Desktop

    • Extract its contents to your Desktop so that you have TDSSKiller.exe directly on your Desktop and not in any subfolder of the Desktop.
    • Now double click the TDSSkiller.exe file to run it ( if using Vista or Windows 7 do not double click on it but rather, right click and select Run As Administrartor.
    • Allow the application to run and a window will open showing that it is TDSSkiller from Kaspersky
    • Click Start scan
    • It will run rather quickly and will notify you of whether anything is found or not.
    • Follow the instructions to delete/quarantine if asks you what to do when if finds something.
    Whether an infection is found or not, a log file should be created on your C: drive ( or whatever drive you boot from) in the root folder named something like TDSSKiller.2.1.1_27.12.2009_14.17.04_log.txt which is based on the program version # and date and time run. Please attach this log to your next reply. (See: HOW TO: Attach Items To Your Post )

    Now try to run both Combofix and MGTools

    Re: Computer Plagued with a myriad of problems, haven't been able to solve any of the

    I ran TDSSKiller as requested and it worked wonderfully. After completing that program I ran Combofix which gave me a few issues at the start: The following alert window appeared 3 times
    Code:
    Windows can't open this file:nircmd.cfxxe
    Afterward though, Combofix told me that my comodo firewall + defense applications were still running (I thought i had disabled them). After making sure comodo was completely off i continued to run ComboFix and it worked like a charm.

    After CF was done i proceeded to run MGTools and that worked without a hitch. I am ataching the log files for ComboFix, MGTools and TDSSkiller.

    I also have a few questions.
    • Why do I have to download some of the programs directly to my desktop?
    • What is done with the logs once a problem is resolved? Will my system information be available to anyone?

    Re: Computer Plagued with a myriad of problems, haven't been able to solve any of the

    Please run the below as I run through those logs.

    Please also download MBRCheck to your desktop

    • Double click MBRCheck.exe to run (vista and Win 7 right click and select Run as Administrator)
    • It will show a Black screen with some data on it
    • Right click on the screen and select > Select All
    • Press Control+C
    • Open a notepad and press Control+V
    • now please ATTACH that report to this thread
    Well the running of a combofix script involves a drag and drop method, easier done on the desktop.

    Usually they are kept up, unless a request is made for them to be taken down, which I can indeed do once we are finally finished. :)

    Re: Computer Plagued with a myriad of problems, haven't been able to solve any of the

    Spyware Doctor 8.0 <--- If this is just a free trial then it is useless and you might just as well uninstall it.

    Little bit more to do.

    Now we need to use ComboFix
    • Make sure that combofix.exe that you downloaded while doing the READ & RUN ME is on your Desktop but Do not run it!
      • If it is not on your Desktop, the below will not work.
    • Also make sure you have shut down all protection software (antivirus, antispyware...etc) or they may get in the way of allowing ComboFix to run properly.
    • If ComboFix tells you it needs to update to a new version, make sure you allow it to update.
    • Open Notepad and copy/paste the text in the below quote box. Ensure you scroll down to select ALL the lines:
    Code:
    KILLALL::

    Driver::
    Avgfwfd
    Folder::
    c:\programdata\AVG10
    c:\programdata\MFAData
    File::
    c:\windows\system32\DRIVERS\avgfwd6x.sys
    c:\windows\UDB.zip
    Registry::
    [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\RunOnce]
    "AvgUninstallURL"=-
    RenV::
    c:\program files\Adobe\Reader 9.0\Reader\Reader_sl .exe
    c:\program files\AVG\AVG9\avgtray .exe
    c:\program files\Common Files\Adobe\ARM\1.0\AdobeARM .exe
    c:\program files\Common Files\Java\Java Update\jusched .exe
    c:\program files\iTunes\iTunesHelper .exe
    c:\program files\Microsoft Office 2007\Office12\GrooveMonitor .exe
    c:\program files\QuickTime\QTTask .exe
    c:\program files\Realtek\Audio\HDA\RtHDVCpl .exe

    • Save the above as CFscript.txt and make sure you save it to the same location (should be on your Desktop) as ComboFix.exe
    • At this point, you MUST EXIT ALL BROWSERS NOW before continuing!
    • You should have both the ComboFix.exe and CFScript.txt icons on your Desktop.
    • Now use your mouse to drag CFscript.txt on top of ComboFix.exe

      [IMG]

    • Follow the prompts.
    • When it finishes, a log will be produced named c:\combofix.txt
    • I will ask for this log below

    Note:

    Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.

    If after running Combofix you discover none of your programs will open up, and you recieve the following error: "Illegal operation attempted on a registry key that has been marked for deletion". Then the answer is to REBOOT the machine, and all will be corrected.

    Now run the C:\MGtools\GetLogs.bat file by double clicking on it. Then attach the new C:\MGlogs.zip file that will be created by running this.

    Let us know of any problems you may have encountered with the above instructions and also let me know how things are running now! (Don't forget the MBRCheck log. I must get some sleep now)

    Re: Computer Plagued with a myriad of problems, haven't been able to solve any of the

    Uhh I ran MBRCheck but was unable to rightclick, copy, paste etc.

    Instead I'm attaching the text file that was created after I ran the program.

    I think that should suffice ;)

    After I'm done with the programs I've been told to use, can I put them in the folder I use to store my security programs?

    Re: Computer Plagued with a myriad of problems, haven't been able to solve any of the

    Not all of them, no. For instance most of the tools we are using here update on a day to day basis. No point in keeping ineffective older versions lying around. That being said, with SUPERantispyware and Malware Bytes... it is worth keeping those pair of gems. :)

    Continue on with my previous instructions in post # 5 now and attach logs once done. You must give me a description of how things are currently running for you too please.

    Re: Computer Plagued with a myriad of problems, haven't been able to solve any of the

    Uhh I think i may have messed something up while posting my last reply (i fear i have made a new thread instead of a reply to this one). This is identical to the last one with logs attached. Just delete the redundancies.

    Ok I had a bit of a hiccup after ComboFixer restarted my computer: it didn't do anything for a few minutes but after a little waiting it did what it was supposed to.

    So far things are running much smoother. No crashes, boot times are much quicker, I've tested the searchbar on my firefox and everything has worked properly so far. I do notice two new desktop.ini icons on my desktop.

    I believe I have attached all the necessary logs. I did, however remove the spyware doctor after running the ComboFixer and before getting the MGlogs, so that may be the cause of any discrepancies

    I was also wondering about processes in my task manager. I've been noticing duplicates (since the time of the first attack) of certain processes. Some of these were the "duds" that i mentioned in my first post. But others I have no idea about: winlogon.exe, taskhost.exe, and a few others.

    They are visible to you because hidden files and folders are set to show whilst we remove malware.

    Uploading logs

    Do those invisible files/folders have anything to do with the $Recycle.bin and various other folders I see popping up in all my partitions?

    Also, I noticed that windows updater is working again. should I update now or wait till we're all finished?

    Just another thing. I've had my usb drive connected to my computer this whole time. Is it getting cleaned as well? If not how do I ensure that it is infection free? Can it infect other computers it has been connected to in the recent past?

    Re: Computer Plagued with a myriad of problems, haven't been able to solve any of the

    Please wait until Kes gives you the all clear to do any updates. As to your flash drive:

    Insert your flash drive before you begin. Hold down the Shift key when inserting the flash drive until Windows detects it to bypass the autorun feature. This will keep the autorun.inf from executing automatically.

    Please have all your removable storage devices ready for disinfection.

    Download Flash Disinfector by sUBs and save it to your desktop.

    * Double-click Flash_Disinfector.exe to run it.
    * Your desktop and icons may disappear. This is normal.
    * It will do a cleanup of removable storage devices, and write a protected Autorun.inf file to help prevent re-infection.
    * Follow any prompts that may appear.
    * The utility may ask you to insert your flash drive and/or other removable drives including your mobile phone. Please do so and allow the utility to clean up those drives as well.
    * Wait until it has finished scanning and then exit the program.
    * There will be no GUI interface or log file produced.
    * Reboot your computer when done.

    Note: Flash_Disinfector will create a hidden folder named autorun.inf in each partition and every USB drive plugged in when you ran it. Don't delete this folder. It will help protect your drives from future infection.

    Re: Computer Plagued with a myriad of problems, haven't been able to solve any of the

    Running Flash Disinfector did nothing. No autorun.inf files were produced and I wasn't prompted at all.

    However upon rebooting the windows updates installed automatically. I dunno if it did any harm to the procedure but just in case I have attached an updated MGlog.

    On a side note, my computer has been running much, much smoother. Still no crashes, no boot problems, no browser redirects, and all my programs start promptly.

    Then your flash drive is fine.

    Still need to remove a few things.

    Please disable all anti-virus and anti-spyware programs while we do the following (re-enable when you are finished):

    * Make sure that combofix.exe that you downloaded while doing the READ & RUN ME is on your Desktop but Do not run it!

    Code:

    c:\program files\Common Files\Adobe\ARM\1.0\AdobeARM .exe

    Reglock::
    [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\system\ControlSet001\Control\PCW\Security]
    @Denied: (Full) (Everyone)

    * Save the above as CFscript.txt and make sure you save it to the same location (should be on your Desktop) as ComboFix.exe
    * At this point, you MUST EXIT ALL BROWSERS NOW before continuing!
    * You should have both the ComboFix.exe and CFScript.txt icons on your Desktop.
    If it asks you to overide the previous file with the same name, click YES.
    * Now use your mouse to drag CFscript.txt on top of ComboFix.exe
    [IMG]
    * Follow the prompts.
    * When it finishes, a log will be produced named c:\combofix.txt

    Are you sure you are disabling all of your AV and AS software? Those two vundo files are still being reported. Probably the best thing to do is for you to see if you can use windows explorer to find and delete them. You may need to uninstall iTunes and Adobe and then reinstall them. Tell me if you can find and delete them.

    Re: Computer Plagued with a myriad of problems, haven't been able to solve any of the

    Yeah, I'm pretty sure. The only realtime protection I have is from Comodo IS and I have all of its features disabled and then I quit out of the program. However, after ComboFixer restarts my computer Comodo is back in my actionbar, so perhaps that is the problem.

    In any case, I have manually deleted both of the files mentioned, and they do not reappear after I have reset my computer.

    Also, I ran through most of the games and programs that I frequently use and none of them have shown any difficulties. Games that would end up crashing before, are running just fine. Same goes for the programs.

    Oh, and is my registry being cleaned as well?

    I also notice that I haven't been asked to use RootRepeal since being able to use ComboFixer and MGTools. Is there no need to use it anymore?

    Btw I really appreciate all the help you guys have given me. I was on the brink of reformatting my hard drives and starting anew. It's great knowing that there are still good people on the internet who aren't trying to kill my comp or steal my money xD

    Re: Computer Plagued with a myriad of problems, haven't been able to solve any of the

    No need to run RootRepeal. As far as cleaning dead registry items, use CCleaner and make sure you do the backup when prompted.

    Good to know everything is running smoothly!!

    If you are not having any other malware problems, it is time to do our final steps:

    1. We recommend you keep SUPERAntiSpyware and Malwarebytes Anti-Malware for scanning/removal of malware. Unless you purchase them, they provide no real time protection. They do not use any significant amount of resources ( except a little disk space ) until you run a scan.We recommend them for doing backup scans when you suspect a malware infection.
    2. If we had you use ComboFix, uninstall ComboFix (This uninstall will only work as written if you installed ComboFix on your Desktop like we requested.)
      • Click START then RUN and enter the below into the run box and then click OK. Note the quotes are required
      • "%userprofile%\Desktop\combofix" /uninstall
        • Notes: The space between the combofix" and the /uninstall, it must be there.
        • This will uninstall ComboFix and also reset hidden files and folders settings back to Windows defaults.

    3. Go back to step 6 of the READ ME and renable your Disk Emulation software with Defogger if you had disabled it.
    4. Any other miscellaneous tools we may have had you install or download can be uninstalled and deleted.
    5. If we had you download any registry patches like fixme.reg or fixWLK.reg (or any others), you can delete these files now.
    6. If running Vista, it is time to make sure you have reenabled UAC by double clicking on the C:\MGtools\enableUAC.reg file and allowing it to be added to the registry.
    7. Go to add/remove programs and uninstall HijackThis.
    8. Goto the C:\MGtools folder and find the MGclean.bat file. Double click on this file to run this cleanup program that will remove files and folders related to MGtools and some other items from our cleaning procedures.
    9. If you are running Win 7, Vista, Windows XP or Windows ME, do the below:
      • Refer to the cleaning procedures pointed to by step 7 of the READ ME
        for your Window version and see the instructions to Disable System Restore which will flush your Restore Points.
      • Then reboot and Enable System Restore to create a new clean Restore Point.

    10. After doing the above, you should work thru the below link:

    Re: Computer Plagued with a myriad of problems, haven't been able to solve any of the

    Thank you so very much, Kestrel13! and TimW! I never imagined that I'd be able to get rid of my plague with such good results! I've just got a few final questions.

    • Is my computer completely clear of infections on all partitions?
    • I have a few programs (Alcohol, Daemon Tools, AVG among others) that I uninstalled during the cleaning process. I do admit that I obtained them through illicit means and I worry that they may harbor some threat. I do also consider them essential (at least the disk emulation software) to the use of my computer. Are they safe to use, and if not is there somewhere I can obtain them free of infection (and the stigma of pirated software)?
    • What was it, exactly, that was plaguing my system?
    • Compared to all the suffering I went through when the infections first showed up and then again a few days ago, the cleaning process with you guys seemed relatively easy and painless. In your professional opinion how bad of an infestation would you say my computer had?
    • My father is strongly suggesting that I use Norton Internet security (obtained via Comcast.net). However I already use Comodo and I haven't had much issue with it. Should I use them both, and if not which one would be a better candidate for keeping?
    • Going through this process has inspired me to want to help others the same way you have helped me. I'd like to think I have at least a moderate amount of knowledge when it comes to working with computer systems. What would it take for me to be able to help on the same level as you?

    Srry for double post, I tried to edit this into my last, but it was expired, apparently.

    I notice folders in all my partitions named $RECYCLE.BIN among a few other folders that weren't there before the cleaning procedure (msdownld.tmp and RECYCLER). Is it safe to remove them?

    Yes, you should be good to go.
    I would suggest that you uninstall any pirated software as you can find freeware programs to use instead.

    There are many names for the same type of infections, it just depends on what AV software chooses to call them. But basically you had a Vundo infection.

    We have seen much, much worse.

    I would suggest that you continue with Comodo. Never use more than one AV program.

    Unfortunately we are too busy to offer training to anyone who is not already a recognized expert. There are a few websites that provide training rooms. The process can take awhile to complete since there is a lot to learn and the people training you are doing it in their free time. Make sure that you are serious about wanting to spend the time to learn and have the time to perform malware removal this because it takes a strong committment. Check out the below sites:

    We can remove your logs, but there isn't anything in them that can identify you. Are you sure you want me to do that?

    Thank you for the links, I will check them out as soon as I am able.

    As far as the logs are concerned, so long as no private information is in them I suppose it wouldn't hurt to keep them up. Is there a way to make it so that only myself and the staff (or just the staff) can view them?

    There is not a way for us to restrict who views the logs. But be assured, they do not give any personal info that could in any way reveal any personal info that would lead someone back to you. The logs now only serve as a "learning tool" for anyone with similar issues. :major

    Fair enough. If people can benefit from my experience, all the better.

    Again, I can't thank you all enough for the help you have given me. :)
    I'll be sure to refer this site to all my friends who have infection issues, and in the meantime I'll look through the store and see how I can support this site.
