So my computer has been randomly freezing and rebooting the last few weeks. I figured it might have been a problem with Windows or a program I had installed, so I performed a clean install yesterday. Much to my chagrin, it continues to happen.

It happens a few times a day. When I first boot up the computer in the morning, I can usually go a few hours before it happens. Once it does, I can go a few more hours before it happens again.

So I figure that it is some sort of hardware issue. Would not be surprising considering I've had this pc since March 2005.

I ran 10 passes of memtest+ and after a few hours, no errors were found. Maybe I need to let it run overnight? I also downloaded SpeedFan and then noticed that my CPU temp is running in the lower 60s and that the core temp is in the high 50s. There is a little flame symbol next to the temp readings, which indicate they are running too hot.

Could overheating be the issue? Are those SpeedFan temps really accurate? Or should I run further diagnostics on my hard drive and memory?

I will post specs in the next reply.

It seems you have identified the issue and it is indeed CPU overheating and needs to "explored". Try running HWMonitor 1.1.6 while your doing everyday stuff. It will generate "min", "max" & avg and will give you a great basis.

60C kills things for older CPUs

Use a can of air if this is a tower and blow out all your dust or lint inside, which can hinder cooling also.
