Computer restarts with black screen

    I bought a used Sony Vaio Laptop, and I can shut down just fine, I can turn the pc if it's been off just fine. However, if I just want to restart the computer in XP Pro /w SP2, Windows will shut down and then where I should have the bios screen and all the start up processes going on before Windows loads I just have this black screen and no buttons get rid of it, I am just forced to hold down the power button until it shuts off. Does anyone have any ideas? Thank you.
