    Hello,

My computer has been running slow, expecially at startup. The motherboard was recently replaced, and they said that I had some spyware and SpySherrif on the computer, even though I regularly ran Windows Defender, AdAware SE, SpyBot, and Norton. I have completed all of the steps of "Read and Run Me First", and attached are the requested logs. Though the computer is running slightly better, it still takes 3 minutes for this laptop to startup, and I have 1MB of RAM! It also takes programs a long time to startup. Thanks for your help!

    Welcome to Majorgeeks!

Please install and rename HijackThis as requested in the READ ME. You have it here:
    C:\Documents and Settings\test\Desktop\computer clean-up\HijackThis.exe

That is exactly where the READ ME specifies not to install it and you did not rename the executable file.

I assume you meant you have 1GB of RAM?? With 1MB your PC would not run!

Make sure viewing of hidden files is enabled (per the tutorial). It does not look like you did step 2 in the READ ME!!!!!

Run HijackThis and select the following lines but DO NOT CLICK FIX until you exit all browser sessions including the one you are reading in right now:
    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [adir] C:\WINDOWS\system32\adirss.exe

    After clicking Fix, exit HJT.
Boot into safe mode and use Windows Explorer to delete:
    C:\WINDOWS\system32\adirss.exe

    Now run Ccleaner.

    Now reboot in normal mode

Now attach the below new logs and tell me how the above steps went.

    1. ShowNew
    2. HJT

Make sure you tell me how things are working now!

Thanks for the quick reply! Yes, you were correct, I had not done the entire Step 2. I thought that I had, since I knew that all my folders were set to show hidden files, but I had not unchecked the Hide Extensions, and unchecked the Hide Protected Operating System Files options.

I reinstalled HJT to the correct place, and ran it. I closed all windows before fixing the adirss.exe file. When I booted into safe mode, and checked explorer for the c:\windows\system32\adirss.exe file, I could not find it. I guess that means that HJT did it's job in "fixing" it. I ran Ccleaner, and deleted 51MB, which was very suprising b/c I had just done that 10 days ago.

Attached are the 2 requested logs. The computer does seem to be running a bit quicker, but it still takes a while to startup, like 2 minutes or so.

    Thanks for your help!

Well your logs are clean so whatever is going on is more than like just due to what you are running. For one thing, Symantec is a big resource hog. And why is the below running:

    C:\WINDOWS\Microsoft.NET\Framework\v2.0.50727\mscorsvw.exe

It can be a resource hog too! Read this:

Also you have Security Task Manager running! Is it only the free trial version? If so, it probably expired and you should uninstall it.

At any rate your problems are not malware. If you are running Windows XP or Windows ME, do the below:
    • go back to step 8 of the READ & RUN ME to Disable System Restore which will flush your Restore Points.
    • Then reboot and Enable System Restore to create a new clean Restore Point.
After doing the above, you should work thru the below link:
