I have a computer here that shuts down or restarts when ever I click on 'my computer' or 'control panel'. If I let the computer sit at the desktop it's fine. I do get an error message every time however that says the system has recovered from a serious error. I go to click on the the technical information about the report and it gives me two files that will be included in the report to MS. Mini010307-01.dmp and sysdata.xlm. Both of these files are in the following file path: C:\Docume~1\Cheri\Locals~1\Temp\WER38dd.dir00\

This happens every time and there's no stopping it. I hear a click, and the monitor goes back and the computer is unresponsive and either restarts or shuts down.

This is the same computer that I'm having problems with regarding it recognizing my mouse, keyboard, Ethernet, and a slew of other things. Any help would be greatly appreciated! Thanks in advance.

    Could it be the motherboard?

That's what I'm suspecting. I'm filled out a support inquiry with ASUS, and I'm just waiting to hear back from them. I was hoping there was something that could be done before I let my friend go six to eight weeks without a computer waiting for the motherboard to come in.

:major Hi. I would try running a registry cleaner and, if you don't have your anti-spyware proggie updated, do that and do a full system scan, and lastly, reinstalling Windoze before changing a board. You might save a buck or two (like 1-800-collect). Best of luck.

What's the power supply? Does this happen in safe mode? Checked the ram? Seems to be jumping the gun here ....:)

    @ Sloopy

Thanks for the advice, but this is a clean install of windows with all updates and drivers and no other programs installed.

    @Tim

The power supply is a 420W that came with the case. Here's a picture of the label from newegg:

I can not get into safe mode because the computer does not recognize the ps/2 keyboard (or mouse for that matter). I only have a USB mouse that I use, no USB keyboard. Even if I did, one of the two USB ports on the motherboard doesn't work.

I ran memcheck over night and it found zero errors. I've taken everything apart and reseated everything as well. Even tried running the computer with the bare minimum and switching out memory sticks. Still no luck.

    Any ideas?

Well....that is weird ...usually on an install, the usb mouse will not work until after the process is complete ...and you have to install using a ps/2 mouse ...

So once the install is complete...you get a desktop ...what about the bios? Can you manuver in there? Is it set to default values?

have you updated the motherboard BIOS?

Well, to get past the install problems I had to make a slipstreamed version of windows with the install disk using nlite. That way i could make it where I didn't have to do anything through the install.

Yes, I can get to the desktop open folders, browse though programs but most of the time when I go to access my computer or control panel, the screen goes black, i hear a click from the tower, and the computer shuts down or restarts.

The BIOS were never messed with and I can't get into them now because the ps/2 ports are unresponsive and I don't have a usb keyboard to try out. As long as no one tampered with them since I built the computer, the BIOS should be set to defaults. I also removed the battery for a good half an hour to reset everything and that proved useless.

Thanks for your help so far. I'm stumped as to what's going on.

Anyone have any ideas? I haven't heard from ASUS yet, so I'm going to call them tomorrow morning. I'd love to get this fixed without having to spring for a new board or wait for a replacement.

Well, I guess I'll never know what caused this. The board is all packaged up and ready to ship out tomorrow. I should have a new one in about two weeks. Much better timing than I expected.
