My computer has been running slow lately despite the fact that I keep up with its maintenance/cleanings. I followed all of the steps listed here: http://forums.majorgeeks.com/showthread.php?t=35407
It all went pretty smooth with the exception that Bitdefender wouldn't scan my system and Panda ActiveScan found 1 virus which it says it removed and 27 spyware that it didn't say it did anything to. I run AVG virus and spyware and zonealarm firewall. But I do download a lot of stuff. So anyway here are the log files from GetRunKey, ShowNew, and HijackThis. My system is running a little faster but not as fast as I think it should or it used to. my wireless connection also seems a little slow still. I don't know how to read these logs or really what to do with them so can someone point me in the right direction. Also are there any "optimizers" that really work, I use my system to watch a lot of HD movies and for downloads. Do the optimizers need to be specific to those? thank you

    Please use add/remove to uninstall:
    FlashGet
    Gamespy arcade

    Download and install:
    Java Runtime 6

Please rename HJT to analyse.exe :
    C:\Program Files\HijackThis\HijackThis.exe -> C:\Program Files\HijackThis\analyse.exe

Please copy the bold text below to notepad. Save it as fixME.reg to your desktop. Be sure the "Save as" type is set to "all files" Once you have saved it double click it and allow it to merge with the registry.

Now download The Avenger by Swandog469, and save it to your Desktop.

    * Extract avenger.exe from the Zip file and save it to your desktop
    * Run avenger.exe by double-clicking on it.
    * Check the 'Input script manually' box.
    * Click on the magnifying glass icon.
    * Copy everything in the Quote box below, and paste it in the box that opens:
    * Now click the 'Done' button.
    * Click on the traffic light icon and OK the prompt.
    * You will be prompted to restart, OK the prompt and your PC should reboot, if not, reboot it yourself.
    * A log file from Avenger will be produced at C:\avenger.txt

    Attach new logs for:
    ShowNew
    GetRunKeys
    HJT
    Avenger

Thank you, I did everything you said and it went smooth. Does this mean the virus should be gone from my system if I run the scans again? Also can I reinstall FlashGet? my downloader for firefox doesn't work right unless I keep my browser moving and I like FlashGet. Should I keep this Java 6 installed. I had a Java program installed once before and it was slowing down my bootup with installs constantly. Also When I last rebooted Windows installed updates, okay? Again Thank You very much for your help. I'm not even going to ask how you knew to do that, I think it was a little over my head.

You may wish to look at this:
    FlashGet

Windows updates are not a problem ...and we can stop Java from doing startup checks for updates....but you need to attach new logs for:
    ShowNew
    GetRunKeys
    HJT

Let me start this one off with I'm so embarrassed. I figured now that my computer was cleaned and since I haven't done it in a while, I would back up my system so I switched on my external HD (guess I should have had that on the whole time, it hasn't been on in months) and I began the windows backup program. While it was going I figured I would run the Panda ActiveScan so it included the external HD. BAM! 3 viruses (it says it removed) 44 spyware and 1 hacker root tool. Here are the logs. I reinstalled Hijack this, after I moved the modified one to the folder I keep all of your ideas in. Again I'm so embarrassed, I should have known to have had that on the whole time. Should I repeat all of the steps here http://forums.majorgeeks.com/showthread.php?t=35407 ?
    Is my backup okay?

As for the flashget I'm sorry I had no idea. It had been recommended to me, I researched it and didn't find anything bad about it. It worked great. I've already begun to contact the people I've recommended it to/installed it on their computers. Do you guys recommend any type of program I can replace it with? As I said my firefox downloader doesn't really work, guess its a common problem. So I need another download manager/accelerator. Again Thank You so very much for all of your help. As soon as I start working again next week I'm going to make a donation to your site.

    The activescan is still showing:
    H:\Backups\5-06-2007\WINDOWS\IECodecPlg.dll
    H:\Backups\5-06-2007\WINDOWS\system32\Tools\Restart.exe
Which need to be removed ...so I would suggest you run the BitDefender scan with both drives running.

Also, you need to rename HJT:
    C:\Program Files\HijackThis\HijackThis.exe -> C:\Program Files\HijackThis\analyse.exe

Copy the bold text below to notepad. Save it as fixME.reg to your desktop. Be sure the "Save as" type is set to "all files" Once you have saved it double click it and allow it to merge with the registry.
    Attach new logs for:
    Bitdefender
    GetRunKeys
    HJT

What is wrong with the FireFox downloading?
    You could try this:
    GDM.

I still have the other converted HiJack this program didn't know if I should use it to create a log so I just moved it and reinstalled it. I did the other fixMe file, I did everything you told me to do. Last time I tried to run the bitdefender from Internet explorer it wouldn't run. I'll try again.

My firefox downloader stops downloading (freezes) after 5MB unless I sit there and keep refreshing a web page or just keep my browser moving. I'll look at the program you suggest, but first I want to get the system clean. Again Thank You for all of your help.

I tried to run Bitdefender as you said but it gives me an error. I tried to attach a screenshot of the error but it was too large. It says "could not load the online scanner" I did everything it suggests in the possible fixes and still it won't run. I'll run the other two again and post the logs.

Okay, I moved the old fixME.reg file you had me make to my Major Geek Tools dir. I made the new one just like you said on my desktop and ran it. Then I took the last install of Hijack this and made it analyse.exe (again). Then I ran it and the log is attached. then I ran the GetRunKey and the log is attached. I didn't know if this would do any good since I couldn't get bitdefender to run but I figured it couldn't hurt. I have not rebooted, should I? Is there something other than bitdefender that I can run? Again I don't mean to be trouble and I appreciate your help.

    • Like all online scans, this can take quite awhile. Be patient and let it do its job.

Your logs look clean. You may uninstall any programs we had you download (including CounterSpy, etc).

You really need to have the latest Java installed!!

If you are not having any other malware problems, it is time to do our final steps:

    1. If we used Pocket Killbox during your cleanup, do the below
    * Run Pocket Killbox and select File, Cleanup, Delete All Backups
    2. If we used ComboFix you can delete the ComboFix.exe file and associated C:\combofix.txt log that was created.
    3. If we user SDFix you can delete all the SDFix related files and folders from your Desktop or whereever you installed it.
    4. If we used VundoFix, you can delete the VundoFix.exe file and the C:\VundoFix Backups folder and C:\vundofix.txt log that was created.
    5. If we had your run FixWareOut, you can delete the Fixwareout.exe file and the C:\fixwareout folder.
    6. If we had you download any registry patches like fixme.reg or fixWLK.reg (or any others), you can delete these files now.
    7. You can delete the ShowNew.Zip and GetRunkey.Zip files and the files that you extracted from the ZIP files. You can also delete the C:\newfiles.txt and C:\runkeys.txt logs that were created
    8. If you are running Windows XP or Windows ME, do the below:
    * go back to step 8 of the READ & RUN ME to Disable System Restore which will flush your Restore Points.
    * Then reboot and Enable System Restore to create a new clean Restore Point.
    9. After doing the above, you should work thru the below link:

When I try to disable my system restore it gives me the error "System restore encountered and error trying to enable/disable one or more drives. Pease restart your machine and try again." So I did and the first thing I did was try to disable it and again I got that error. I did not run anything else. What do I do?

    Try in safe mode.

  31. TimW

If it still doesn't work in safe mode...it may be corrupt ...try this":
    Restore System restore
You may be asked for the Windows XP CD. if you haven't got a retail copy of the XP CD, point your browser to the i386 folder, locate the INF folder and see if you can install System restore form there.

    1/ Open Windows Explorer

2/ on the Main toolbar click Tools

3/ From the drop down menu click Folder Options

4/ The folder Options Properties window will now open

    5/ Click the View tab

6/ In the advanced Settings list scroll down to the Hidden Files and Folders section

7/ Click on the radio button next to the Show Hidden Files and Folders option

8/ Click OK to close the Folder Options Properties window

9/ In the left hand pane of windows explorer click the + sign next to My Computer

10/ This now expands the drive list

11/ Click the + sign next to the C: drive to expand the folder list

12/ From the folder list navigate to the Windows folder and click the + sign next to this to expand the folder list

13/ Scroll down and click on the INF folder

14/ A list of INF files will appear in the right hand pane of Windows explorer

    15/ Look for a file called SR.INF

16/ Once you have located SR.INF Right Click on the folder

17/ From the drop down menu click on Install

18/ System restore should now re-install

19/ If you are asked at any time to insert your Windows XP CD (typically to copy files sr.sys and srframe.mmf) then do so. This enables fresh files to be copied over to your hard drive. Don't try browsing to the Windows directory on your hard drive for the relevant file as all you will be doing is replacing one corrupt file with another

Ok safe mode didn't work. I had to do it the long way. That worked, just created a new restore point. THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR ALL OF YOUR HELP! Now I'm going to search the site for an optimizer as my system is still running a little slower than it used to/than I would like. My internet is back up to speed though. That GigaGet you suggested really sucks my 2 GB of memory. I think I'll look for another replacement for that too. This time I'll run it by you guys before I start using it. I solute you TimW
