This is what I posted in the welcome center:

I'm trying to fix my friends computer and its going poorly. First off, I can't access the hijackthis web site or the major geeks site, or any site that could be helpful and is known as useful (from his computer). The home page of sporting news, it will go to, and anything I google it finds (including the pages it won't let me visit). I can't install the latest java program (It uninstalls at java live) and I'm trying to do this while its trying to shut down.

I have been watching the task manager after boot and it goes crazy on the services. If I boot in safe mode, it works o.k. other than the fact that I'm in safe mode. In normal mode, it ends up telling me it's going to reboot in 60 seconds with "services status code 1073741819". I had a problem with it looking for "cpmrotata.dll" and I don't know if that was fixed or it just stopped showing up. Any help would be very much appreciated (Oh, geeks please save me), and I hope to hear from you soon.

I have run all the scans suggested above I can and CCleaner and spybot. It took me almost an hour to convince it to copy the logs on to a thumb drive, but here they are.

And of course the hijackthis log: apparently I can't attach again even in a different thread, so its on my first post.

The log you needed to attach is C:\MGlogs.zip file. Please attach this. It contains all the requested logs accept the logs from ComboFix and AVG Antispyware. Do you have these logs too.

    Please complete the below instructions.

Now download The Avenger by Swandog46, and save it to your Desktop.
    • Extract avenger.exe from the Zip file and save it to your desktop
    • Run avenger.exe by double-clicking on it.
    • Check the 'Input script manually' box.
    • Click on the magnifying glass icon.
    • Copy everything in the Quote box below, and paste it in the box that opens:
    • Now click the 'Done' button.
    • Click on the traffic light icon and OK the prompt.
    • You will be prompted to restart, OK the prompt and your PC should reboot, if not, reboot it yourself.
    • A log file from Avenger will be produced at C:\avenger.txt

Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune. This program does not require an installation. The executable actually runs the program.

NOTE: This program is for Windows XP and Windows 2000 only. ATF Cleaner will remove all files from the items that are checked so if you have some cookies you'd like to save. Please move them to a different directory first.
    • Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
    • Under Main choose: Select All
    • Click the Empty Selected button.
    If you use Firefox browser
    • Click Firefox at the top and choose: Select All
    • Click the Empty Selected button.
      • NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click No at the prompt.
    If you use Opera browser
    • Click Opera at the top and choose: Select All
    • Click the Empty Selected button.
      • NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click No at the prompt.
Click Exit on the Main ATF Cleaner menu to close the program.

Now run the C:\MGtools\GetLogs.bat file by double clicking on it. Then attach the new C:\MGlogs.zip file that will be created by running this and also attach the log from Avenger.

Make sure you tell me how things are working now!

    Thank you,

The computer now boots in to normal mode without crashing. I still can't find your web site after google does, but I managed to get the logs:

    Attached Files:

  5. Raven9969

    Raven9969 Private E-2

    And the AVG log.

That is not a log from the AVG Antispyware scan.

Note MGtools.exe is not supposed to be run from your Desktop:
    C:\Documents and Settings\HP_Owner\Desktop\yea\MGtools.exe

See the instructions. You were lucky this time. And in addition I did not say run MGtools again. I said to run GetLogs.bat. Please follow instructions properly in the future to avoid potential problems or complications.

    Please delete the below files:
    C:\3DF.tmp
    C:\3E0.tmp
    C:\3E1.tmp
    C:\3E2.tmp
    C:\WINDOWS\system32\cpmrot-uninst.exe
    C:\WINDOWS\system32\sdfixwcs.dll
    C:\WINDOWS\TEMP\fa9c5f8e.dat

Also delete all files in the below folder. Windows will not let you delete a couple of files from the current date. Just work around them to get all the others deleted.
    C:\Documents and Settings\HP_Owner\Local Settings\temp

    Now delete the below folders:
    C:\Documents and Settings\HP_Owner\Application Data\Sunbelt Software
    C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Viewpoint

You are using Spybot - Search & Destroy 1.3. This version has not been used in 3 years. You need to uninstall this and install what was given in the READ ME. Follow the instructions in the READ ME to get it installed properly without Teatimer.

Let me know if you have any problems getting all of the above files and folders deleted.

Run this Disable/Remove Windows Messenger to remove Windows Messenger. Do not confuse Windows Messenger with MSN Messenger because they are not the same. Windows Messenger is a frequent cause of popups.
Run C:\MGtools\analyse.exe by double clicking on it. This is really HijackThis (select Do a system scan only) and select the following lines but DO NOT CLICK FIX until you exit all browser sessions including the one you are reading in right now:

    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [TkBellExe] "C:\Program Files\Common Files\Real\Update_OB\realsched.exe" -osboot
    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [AlcxMonitor] ALCXMNTR.EXE
    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [QuickTime Task] "C:\Program Files\QuickTime\qttask.exe" -atboottime
    O20 - AppInit_DLLs:
    O20 - Winlogon Notify: abc32reg - C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Documents\Settings\abc32.dll (file missing)

NOTE: HJT may popup an error about the AppInit_DLLs line. Ignore it and click OK to continue.

    After clicking Fix, exit HJT.

    Now run Ccleaner!

Now run the C:\MGtools\GetLogs.bat file by double clicking on it. Then attach the new C:\MGlogs.zip file that will be created by running this and also attach the log from Avenger.

Make sure you tell me how things are working now!

I followed most of the instructions, but did you say to run avenger again (this is the part I failed on)? I tried and it asked me what scan for and I'm not sure what to do at that point. Google still finds Major Geeks in a search, but can't find it on a link and can't connect to it. There seem to be 2 trojens I can't get rid of, AVG will quarantine them, but they keep coming back when I try to delet them. Thank you so much for your help.

Okay now that we got the first part of your infection fixed, let's fix the WareOut infection.

Run this: WareOut Removal and attach the requested log from FixWareOut.

Now run the C:\MGtools\GetLogs.bat file by double clicking on it. Then attach the new C:\MGlogs.zip file that will be created

Thank Geek, I can now access your web site from the infected computer. I still can't install Java and there still seems to be a trojan, but this is sooo much better. Here are the logs.

This is not a malware issue. I see that Windows installed is always running on your PC. This is typcially a sign of an incomplete installation or uninstall. You should try running the below to see if you can cleanup what may be broken:

    Windows Installer CleanUp Utility

Otherwise you will need to go to the Software Forum and give them an Event log that shows why Windows Installer is failing on so they can help you clean it up.

Part of your problem is also that a Windows Service is not running possible due to a file missing. It is seen in your HJT log like below:

O23 - Service: Application Layer Gateway Service (ALG) - Unknown owner - C:\WINDOWS\System32\alg.exe (file missing)

You need to get this file back into the system32 folder. This is also an issue for the Software Forum but you may be able to do this by running sfc /scannow from a command prompt or from the Start, Run box.

We do have more malware to remove. I will get to that it my next post which will probably be tomorrow since I need some sleep. But here are some things you can try to do manually and it maybe it will work.

    Delete the below files
    Code:
    "C:\WINDOWS\system32\"
    rasqervy.dll Dec 7 2007 8 "rasqervy.dll"
    sdfinacs.dll Dec 7 2007 8 "sdfinacs.dll"
    sdfixwcs.dll Dec 7 2007 5 "sdfixwcs.dll"
    wuasirvy.dll Dec 7 2007 104 "wuasirvy.dll"

    "C:\WINDOWS\TEMP\"
    1426aa3.dat Dec 5 2007 135660 "1426aa3.dat"
    433e7c4.dat Dec 7 2007 135660 "433e7c4.dat"
    4ae03bde.dat Dec 7 2007 135660 "4ae03bde.dat"
    67ca244c.dat Dec 7 2007 135660 "67ca244c.dat"
    d6e27dba.dat Dec 5 2007 135660 "d6e27dba.dat"

Also delete all files in the below folder except ones from the current date (Windows will not let you delete the files from the current day).
    C:\Documents and Settings\HP_Owner\Local Settings\Temp

You're welcome. Your logs are clean.

If you are not having any other malware problems, it is time to do our final steps:
    1. If we used Pocket Killbox during your cleanup, do the below
      • Run Pocket Killbox and select File, Cleanup, Delete All Backups
    2. If we used ComboFix, you can delete the ComboFix.exe file, C:\ComboFix folder, C:\QooBox folder, C:\WINDOWS\nircmd.exe, C:\combofix.txt and C:\ComboFix-quarantined-files.txt logs that was created.
    3. If we user SDFix you can delete all the SDFix related files and folders from your Desktop or whereever you installed it.
    4. If we used SmitFraudFix, you can delete all files and folders related to it now including the c:\rapport.txt log.
    5. If we used VundoFix, you can delete the VundoFix.exe file and the C:\VundoFix Backups folder and C:\vundofix.txt log that was created.
    6. If we had your run FixWareOut, you can delete the Fixwareout.exe file and the C:\fixwareout folder.
    7. If we had you run Avenger, you can delete all files related to Avenger now.
    8. If we had you download any registry patches like fixme.reg or fixWLK.reg (or any others), you can delete these files now.
    9. You can delete the C:\MGtools folder and the C:\MGtools.exe file. You can also delete the C:\MGlogs.zip
    10. If you are running Windows XP or Windows ME, do the below:
      • Refer to the cleaning steps in the READ ME for your Window version and see the steps to Disable System Restore which will flush your Restore Points.
      • Then reboot and Enable System Restore to create a new clean Restore Point.
    11. After doing the above, you should work thru the below link:
