    After going about my business confident that my PC was secure for years I was surfing a familiar site when my anti-virus/firewall tells me I just picked up a Trojan. I wasn't downloading anything at the time and was merely reading through a webpage. Zone alarm Antivirus said it had detected and removed a threat after which my firewall (also ZA) popped up several access requests, which I immediately denied.

    My PC appeared to have locked up and I had to hard restart. When I got back in a pop-up tells me that I have maleware and I should download this and that. Turns out I picked up a Trojan/ maleware called braviax. It stuck an icon in the system tray which, if clicked, began to download what appeared to be a windows malware removal tool (I never allowed it to complete after the first time I clicked the icon to see what it was). I tried several times to remove the icon and corresponding file (braviax.exe) from the system32 folder. First by add/remove programs, CCleaner, Ad-aware, and finally msconfig. After restart each time the icon remained and the file was back in the system32 folder. At this point I came to majorgeeks and went through the README FIRST, got all the recommended programs and ran them, if possible (logs attached).

    SuperAntispyware seemed to have found and removed the malware including the offending file, several registry entries and a rootkit (see attached log).

    Malwarebytes found several more reg. entries as well as an addional file, which may have been downloaded after the initial infection. (atached)

    Combo-fix ran (attached)

    Root repeal would not run and I got an error on its startup

    I ran sophos anti-rootkit and it found several but I've no idea what they are and didn't mess with them (mostly from adobe acrobat) I couldn’t get it to give me a log.

    MG-tools ran but I'm uncomfortable posting a ZIP with so much system information in it, I'm somewhat paranoid of late :-o If it is truly necessary I can post it but I'm hoping that Antispy and Malewarebytes removed the problem.

    I'm mostly concerned with the rootkits. I'm not really familiar with them but from what I've read they can be a ***** to find and remove. Root repeal wouldn’t run so I can not post a log. If there is another rootkit program out there I can try that instead. If need be I can post the search results from Sophos (I can't get it to make a log) but I'll refrain from posting the results in this post unless someone wants to see them.

    I was hoping for some conformation or perhaps a reassuring word after a long night of PC cleaning that the problem has been solved.

    Thanks a bunch.

    Please attach the C:\MGLogs.zip. There is nothing in those logs that would be a security risk to you. :major

    You still have some traces that need to be removed.

    Lets just do this......Please disable all anti-virus and anti-spyware programs while we do the following (re-enable when you are finished):

    * Make sure that combofix.exe that you downloaded while doing the READ & RUN ME is on your Desktop but Do not run it!
    If it is not on your Desktop, the below will not work.
    * Also make sure you have shut down all protection software (antivirus, antispyware...etc) or they may get in the way of allowing ComboFix to run properly.
    * If ComboFix tells you it needs to update to a new version, make sure you allow it to update.
    * Open Notepad and copy/paste the text in the below code box into it (make sure you scroll all the way down in the code box to get all lines selected ):
    Code:
    KILLALL::

    File::
    C:\WINDOWS\vgeoxzd.txt

    Folder::
    C:\Program Files\PC_Antispyware2010

    Registry::
    [-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Shared Tools\MSConfig\startupreg\braviax]

    [-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Shared Tools\MSConfig\startupreg\PC Antispyware 2010]

    * Save the above as CFscript.txt and make sure you save it to the same location (should be on your Desktop) as ComboFix.exe
    * At this point, you MUST EXIT ALL BROWSERS NOW before continuing!
    * You should have both the ComboFix.exe and CFScript.txt icons on your Desktop.
    If it asks you to overide the prvevious file with the same name, click YES.
    * Now use your mouse to drag CFscript.txt on top of ComboFix.exe
    [IMG]
    * Follow the prompts.
    * When it finishes, a log will be produced named c:\combofix.txt
    * I will ask for this log below

    Note:

    Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.

    Now run the C:\MGtools\GetLogs.bat file by double clicking on it (Note: if using Vista, don't double click, use right click and select Run As Administrator).

    Then attach the below logs:

    * C:\ComboFix.txt
    * C:\MGlogs.zip

    As requested, the logs are below.

    After combofix ran it restarted my PC (and my antivirus) and i got a load of firewall warnings. I assumed this was combofix. I allowed them and combofix produced the log.

    MG ran but i got two errors, I canceled them and MG completed and produced the log.

    Out of curiosity, what are these things we're trying to remove? Just left over files/reg entries from the initial infection?

    Thanks for your time!

    Yes we were removing leftover traces of the initial infection. I want you to do one last thing and that is to use windows explorer to find and delete:
    C:\5fb56bf4178de52650aa3a0cd5ea6e5a

    If you are able to do that, then If you are not having any other malware problems, it is time to do our final steps:
    1. We recommend you keep SUPERAntiSpyware and Malwarebytes Anti-Malware for scanning/removal of malware. Unless you purchase them, they provide no real-time protection. They are useful as backup scanners.They do not use any significant amount of resources ( except a little disk space ) until you run a scan.
    2. If we had you use ComboFix, uninstall ComboFix (This uninstall will only work as written if you installed ComboFix on your Desktop like we requested.)
      • Click START then RUN and enter the below into the run box and then click OK. Note the quotes are required
      • "%userprofile%\Desktop\combofix" /u
        • Notes: The space between the combofix" and the /u, it must be there.
        • This will uninstall ComboFix and also reset hidden files and folders settings back to Windows defaults.
    3. Any other miscellaneous tools we may have had you install or download can be uninstalled and deleted.
    4. If we had you download any registry patches like fixme.reg or fixWLK.reg (or any others), you can delete these files now.
    5. If running Vista, it is time to make sure you have reenabled UAC by double clicking on the C:\MGtools\enableUAC.reg file and allowing it to be added to the registry.
    6. Go to add/remove programs and uninstall HijackThis.
    7. Goto the C:\MGtools folder and find the MGclean.bat file. Double click on this file to run this cleanup program that will remove files and folders related to MGtools and some other items from our cleaning procedures.
    8. If you are running Vista, Windows XP or Windows ME, do the below:
      • Refer to the cleaning procedures in step 3 the READ ME for your Window version and see the instructions to Disable System Restore which will flush your Restore Points.
      • Then reboot and Enable System Restore ato create a new clean Restore Point.
    9. After doing the above, you should work thru the below link:

    Fire deleted. Thanks for all your time and advice. Hopefully, that will be the end of it but knowing me...I'll probably be back :-D

    Thanks again and have a better one.
