I have been using adaware for a while. Has never found anything, of course I delete cookies and temp files before running all the time. Recently I tried Xcleaner from Xbloc which promtly found Cool Web Search, along with 2 other spyware's, and promptly removed them. Adaware never detected these and I update it as soon as new defs come out. I have also downloaded Microsofts Antispyware Beta and ran this after deleting the 3 spyware that Xcleaner found and it found 0. I rebooted and ran both scans, 0 spyware found. So, should I still try all 3 of these spyware tools in safe mode if after a reboot they don't find anything?

Also, why did Adawaere not find Cool Web Search????

If they are not finding anything in normal mode that they cannot fix, you do not need to run them in safe mode.

You will find that every tool has things they find that others do not. That is why we recommend using more than one. Also some tools can find thing but not fix them and others may.

    Chaslang,

Thanks, again, for your response. One more question. Since Adaware did not find this and Xcleaner did and Microsofts Antispyware came up clean. How can I be sure all variants and all spyware is gone?? Are Xcleaner and Microsoft Antispyware, along with Adaware, good enough to cover all my bases????

PS by the way, I was shocked that Xcleaner found and removed Cool Web Search, along with 2 others. Is this a good spyware program????

There are on the order of 165 or so variants of CWS. Some of them can be easily removed by a large variety of programs. A bunch of them cannot be removed by any programs available and require manual removal.

I'm not sure how good overall X-Cleaner is. It is not really one of the ones that gets a lot of use.
In most case the free tools are sufficient for everyone. As I stated above the more complex problems always require manual cleaning methods anyway. You will find that MS Antispyware is quite good. Another very good tool (not free) is Spy Sweeper This is a 15 or 30 day trial which blocks, scans, detects and cleans.
