i installed a seagate 500gb sata drive in my computer.
my mobo is an asus p4c800-e deluxe, and im running winxp.
i enabled the "promise fasttrack 378 controller" in the bios and on start up it detects the drive and then boots windows, but windows doesnt see the drive in disk manager.
i dont know what to do about this.
i was reading some other things about this and someone had said something about there being 2 sata connectors on the mobo, one on the south bridge on the intel chipset (something like that i think) and another on the promise controller, and there are 2 sets of 2 sata connectors on the mobo, and if i plug it into one it sees it when it loads and lists it with the promise controller, but in the other one it says there isnt one connected.
should i not use the promise controller and put it in the other part, and if so how do i make disk manager see that?

also, in device manager under "winxp promise fasttrak 378 (tm) controller" it has a little yellow warning sign, and when i go to the properties it says "windows could not load the installer for SCSIAdapter." and it says "this device cannot start. (code 10)" on the properties page.

i would appreciate any help, thank you.

i connected it to the other set of sata connectors, and now it shows up in the bios under the list of ide hard drives, and when windows boots it comes up with found new hard ware and tries to install drivers for "ide controller" i dont know where i can get these drivers, i dont have the cd for this mobo because it was a hand-me-down computer.

the drive still wont show up under disk manager, so i downloaded a disk tool from seagates website, "disc wizard" and im hoping i can format it with that and get it recognized maybe.

Your board appears to have a total of 4 sata ports. 2 running from the intel southbridge and 2 on the Promise controller.

    http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/intel,842-11.html

The ports are labelled SATA1, SATA2 and SATA RAID1, SATA RAID 2.

I have not downloaded the manual to ascertain which are which but would guess that the ones labelled SATA RAID are for the Promise.

In respect of the download required, from the link on the post above

    http://support.asus.com/download/dow...800-E Deluxe

expand the IDE section (ie click on the + sign) scroll down to XP - Version 1.00.1.37 2003/09/18 update

This appears to be the last one.

XP has detected the new hardware (ie promise fasttrack) but found no drivers. You can go to device manager, select the Promise fasttrack controller and select the Update driver tab and point to appropriate folder that you downloaded ie the XP one.

    Good Luck

Windows won't usually see a drive that's NOT partitioned (and formatted) .
It makes no difference whether it's an IDE or SATA.

I always partition every new drive I get, in DOS with FDISK.
Then Windows sees it just fine and can format it in Windows.
Windows XP or Vista will only format a HD as NTFS.
(or, if you want it as a storage drive, you can format it as FAT-32 from the DOS boot disk, after setting up the partition(s).)

It never hurts to have a DOS boot disk laying around, with all the DOS utilities on it.
I use one made on my Windows ME computer.

    Just a thought

there is only one sata drive though so i shouldnt use the raid setup right?
i figured this and switched the sata cable into the intel ports on the mobo, and when windows boots it tells me it found new hardware, "ide controller" but doesnt have drivers for that. and all the drivers listed on that page are for the promise fast track controller, which the sata cable isnt plugged into.

Both the Intel Sata and Promise Sata ports should work in what they call IDE mode (as well as in raid mode). IDE mode effectively treats each drive connected as separate and independent in the same manner as connecting 2 drives on one of the mobo's IDE controller. There will be an option in the bios to that effect (ie setting to IDE mode).

Labelling 2 of the sata ports as raid is confusing but at least it helps to identify which sata ports belong to which controller.

My mobo Asus A8V deluxe has the same set up as yours ie in my case Via sata controller and Promise Sata controller. I run 2 hdds on the Promise controller in IDE mode simply because my system is oc'ed and the Promise controller is better able to handle this.

I think that the Intel Sata controller drivers should be downloaded from the Intel site as they form part of the chipset driver.

    Good Luck

i downloaded the "intel chipset identification utility" to see if perhaps the manual was mistaken, and when i run it it fails to identify my chipset.

i have the following 2 errors in my event viewer log since attaching this hdd.

The Windows Image Acquisition (WIA) service hung on starting.

The following boot-start or system-start driver(s) failed to load:
    sptd

ok so my uncle had the idea to disconnect the ide drives, and to insert the windows installation disc, and see if i needed to install 3rd party drivers in order for the disc to acknowledge the sata drive, and i didnt. this must mean that the drivers for this type of sata drive come preinstalled with xp, which means to me that the problem must be one of two things.
either i dont have the driver, or there is a 3rd party driver running that is messing it up.

when it finds new hardware it shouldnt come up as "ide controller" because it isnt one, so something is telling windows the wrong information.

does anyone know the name of the driver responsible for using sata drives in win xp?
