Connection fails on first attempt

I've been having problems connecting to the internet lately. My settings are as follows:

- XP SP2
- Motorola Surfboard Cable Modem
- Netgear WGR614 Wireless Router
- ZoneAlarm Pro 6

Both my wired desktop and my wireless router have the same problem. You'll start the computer up and the internet icon shows up in the taskbar and says "Acquiring network address." It'll do that continuously with no progress. The only way to get connected from the desktop is to disable the connection and then re-enable. The same pretty much goes for the laptop, but performance isn't too great (it'll flat out stop working after a few minutes). I've looked at all of the router settings and everything seems to be in order.

I was using WPA-PSK for the security but have since switched to WEP to see if that helped any on the wireless end. I've updated the router firmware but still have the same results. Is it possible that ZA is the problem? Thanks for any ideas and tips you may have.

 

It's possible that ZA6 is causing the problem. There have been all sorts of issues with ZA6 of late, I don't use ZA. If your problems started around the time you installed ZA6, that would be the most likely cause. Briefly disable ZA6 and see if you can connect.

 

check your network connection (1) for possible proxy server enabled & (2) check for garbage/skumware at trend micro's housecall url.

(1) goto DOS (START>RUN > enter "cmd" [ok] > enter "ipconfig/all"...
check for (valid) ip address AND default gateway, dhcp & dns servers.
If this the configuration info is geekjibber, post your info.

(2) @ DOS enter "control" | Internet Options > [Connections] tab > LAN Settings...Proxy Server (unless you are running a proxy server, this should be unchecked & blank)...
