I am using AVG free,no probs, have for years and love it, but recent reviews in pc world and other places makes me wonder if it is best choice, staying free. I have been looking and using your site so bit bullet and registered LOL I think I did in past with similar nick but not sure.
Any suggestions? I am on win xp sp 2 use avg free, A squared, ZA free, winpatrol, sbsd w/ teatimer, spywareblaster and spyware guard to name a few

Personally, I would keep using what you are. If you are having no problems then the programs are doing their jobs. I too have AVG free and see no reason to pay for an antivirus.

You've got a good arsenal of security programs there, you don't need to pay for an AV program. I ditched A-squared in favor of ewido, myself, but you're in pretty good shape. The biggest thing you can do to protect your computer is don't use Internet Explorer! I use Firefox, but Opera is good, too, or Flock, or K-meleon. Just don't use IE, or anything based on IE, and your AV and antispyware programs will have very little to do.

Greenknight I have FF as my default browser and love it.
I do still use ie for emails and my group functions as ff doesnt work right for them, I know for secure reasons but very frustrating, does anything meet in the middle? For creating pages and using html in msn groups.....

Consensus on the security forums I visit are Kaspersky and or Nod 32 as the best.

Not that I use either. My resident av,Etrust Vet engine and Ewido are only used as on demand scanners.

Firefox run through Sandboxie,IMHO,offers far better protection for inet born malware than any signature based security apps.

So all I'm running is Sandboxie and Zonealarm pro.But my ghost images certainly give me confidence.:)

    my two cents.

i use avast. i've also used antivir and avg. i've had great luck with all three programs.

having an AV is a must with todays internet, but the majority depends on your surfing habits. i've gone 6-8 months before between scans (av and spyware) and have had zero intrusions/detections. don't put yourself in a situation to receive a virus and it won't matter what av program you use :)

I'm afraid some msn groups features just won't work in anything but IE. You don't need to use IE for your email, though, there are lots of alternatives.

If you feel you need more protection, you could add the free Bitdefender 8 on-demand scanner as a backup to AVG. I've got that, it doesn't conflict with AVG in any way:

Use the IE Tab extension to view pages using IE. If that doesn't work so well, try it in combination with IE View.

What you have looks like a good virus/spyware/adware barrier.
If you still have spyware/adware problems and are still willing to pay for a program, try WebRoot. I've heard it's an excellent program. If you don't have constant problems you can't seem to solve, however, you probably won't need it.

Consider this another vote for staying with AVG free.
