does having raid 0 (data striping) mean that the hard drives run constantly (light and noise every 3seconds, since forever)?

First and formeost, it could be nothing; Windows is most likely moving apps around, usually when idle, so if you notice hard drive activity while your doing nothing, then yes it is normal.

I was told you could disable it with Powertoys, but I can not confirm this. If you use XP and want to tinker, we zipped all the toys up: http://www.majorgeeks.com/Microsoft_Windows_XP_PowerToys_d710.html

Drive indexing could cause this as well, if you dont use search much disable it by right clicking a drive or managing its service. Frankly, I dont really think this would cause it constantly, but i disable it for performance because I dont use search.

Finally, we can go old school and blame malware, but you should know if that is a risk or not.

Have you looked in the Task Manager to see if there is anything untowards.

Sometimes xp for no reason starts to defrag and this entry can be clearly seen in the task manager. Not sure if this is what is happening in your case.

Thank you both for your replies. I will assume that it is not a problem, but I will download powertoys and see if anything there helps. I will post again if I "solve" the constant noise, activity. Again thanks.
