    Hey,

I've done all the steps in "read & run me first". Spybot sees Smitfraud-c.core and it's file core.cache.dsk. comes back every time I reboot. I know I'm not the first. Could you please help me.... This thing has control of my internet explorer. I downloaded a fake Active-x upgrade. I got a rootkit and other stuff for free (mllji.dll for one). I got rid of that file but have no luck with core.cache.dsk.

    Thank you,

    Kirk

PS. ccleaner is cool. I had the Pigpen of computers... now I'm looking sharp.

If you haven't already, please disable the Guest account in User accounts.

Please use add/remove programs to uninstall:
    LimeWire 4.14.10

I am not seeing any anti-virus software installed.....
Please disable all anti-virus and anti-spyware programs while we do the following (re-enable when you are finished):

Run C:\MGtools\analyse.exe by double clicking on it. This is really HijackThis (select Do a system scan only) and select the following lines but DO NOT CLICK FIX until you exit all browser sessions including the one you are reading in right now:
    After clicking Fix, exit HJT.

Now Copy the bold text below to notepad. Save it as fixME.reg to your desktop. Be sure the "Save as" type is set to "all files" Once you have saved it double click it and allow it to merge with the registry.
Now download The Avenger by Swandog469, and save it to your Desktop.

    * Extract avenger.exe from the Zip file and save it to your desktop
    * Run avenger.exe by double-clicking on it.
    * Check the 'Input script manually' box.
    * Click on the magnifying glass icon.
    * Copy everything in the Quote box below, and paste it in the box that opens:

    * Now click the 'Done' button.
    * Click on the traffic light icon and OK the prompt.
    * You will be prompted to restart, OK the prompt and your PC should reboot, if not, reboot it yourself.
    * A log file from Avenger will be produced at C:\avenger.txt

Download and save RenV.exe to Desktop (must be on the Desktop)
    * Doubleclick RenV.exe
o When finished, it will produce a new log named Log.txt on the Desktop.
o Attach this log to your next reply.

Now run the C:\MGtools\GetLogs.bat file by double clicking on it. Then attach the new C:\MGlogs.zip file that will be created by running this and also attach the log from Avenger.

Let's try again to remove the core item.

Please copy the bold text below to notepad. Save it as fixME.reg to your desktop. Be sure the "Save as" type is set to "all files" Once you have saved it double click it and allow it to merge with the registry.
Run avenger.exe by double-clicking on it.

Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune. This program does not require an installation. The executable actually runs the program.

NOTE: This program is for Windows XP and Windows 2000 only. ATF Cleaner will remove all files from the items that are checked so if you have some cookies you'd like to save. Please move them to a different directory first.

    * Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
    * Under Main choose: Select All
    * Click the Empty Selected button.

    If you use Firefox browser

    * Click Firefox at the top and choose: Select All
    * Click the Empty Selected button.
o NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click No at the prompt.

    If you use Opera browser

    * Click Opera at the top and choose: Select All
    * Click the Empty Selected button.
o NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click No at the prompt.

Click Exit on the Main ATF Cleaner menu to close the program.

Now run the C:\MGtools\GetLogs.bat file by double clicking on it. Then attach the new C:\MGlogs.zip file that will be created by running this and also attach the log from Avenger.

Be sure to tell us how things are running.

Try running avenger again...in safe mode.

If it still won't work ...use windows explorer to find and delete those files.

Step 1 of the READ ME: Do not use MSconfig to control startups!!!!

So why is MSconfig being used and there is also malware in there!!!

My Fault. I reviewed and followed all steps in "read & run me first". I won't touch my machine until I here from you. Here are the logs.

Combo fix did not run....you have the same items in the HJT log as you did a few messages back:
    O4 - HKLM\..\RunOnce: [SpybotDeletingA8807] command /c del "C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\core.cache.dsk"
    O4 - HKLM\..\RunOnce: [SpybotDeletingC243] cmd /c del "C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\core.cache.dsk"
    O4 - HKCU\..\RunOnce: [SpybotDeletingB360] command /c del "C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\core.cache.dsk"
    O4 - HKCU\..\RunOnce: [SpybotDeletingD3985] cmd /c del "C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\core.cache.dsk"

and you have some unknown items showing in your msconfig settings:
    [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Shared Tools\MSConfig\startupreg\BLDN]

    [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Shared Tools\MSConfig\startupreg\msbb]

Here is what I suggest you do:
Bitdefender agree to the license and then select Scan. DO NOT CHANGE THE OPTIONS TO SHOW ALL FILES SCANNED. That will make your logs huge and we don't need to see clean files. Once Bitdefender completes the scan:

Click-on the Detected Problems tab. Then select Click here to export the scan report

When the window comes up to save the report, change the Save as type: box to Text (Tab Delimited) (*.txt) and then in the File name box enter change to bdscan then click save. This will save a file named bdscan.txt in whatever folder you are currently in when you save the file (take notice of where you are at so you can find it later). This bdcan.txt file will actually contain HTML code that we can easily view later while reviewing your log. All we have to do is rename the file to bdscan.html.

Thanks for your time. I must have missed these items when doing the steps in "Read & Run this first". Also combo fix seams to run fine the last two times. But when the program restarts XP I get a message that XP shut down improperly and one or more of my disks needs to be scanned. So I let it scan and it tells me some files are bad and will be truncated. It makes a folder in the c drive called "found000". Is this part of my problem? I have question about Normal startup in Msconfig. I choose Normal like it says in your documentation. but every time I look back at msconfig "selective start" is selected. I rechoose "normal" and exit without restart. Is my machine somehow selecting "selective" automaticaly? and how do I know if I really have a "normal" startup? chaslang said I was running in "selective" I thought I was for sure in "normal".... I used to be "Normal" now I'm :confused

Sorry for the delay ...we are very short handed at the moment.

BitDefender removed all your quarantine files and malware in your system restore folders ...(the quarantined files should have been deleted from the Read and Run First instructions, and system restore is part of the final cleanup we ask you to do when we are sure you are malware free).

If you are getting errors when you run a check disk ...that means your hard drive is dying.

Also, when you set msconfig to normal start up, the effect will not take place until you restart the machine.

Are you saying that after restarting it is still coming up as selective mode?

Yes. Every time I open msconfig the selective start radio button is selected. I open msconfig, select normal start, hit apply, hit ok, and then restart. It looks like a normal startup. Then if I open msconfig again the selective start is selected. I have never noticed this before. Maybe it's normal and I never thought about it. I guess that every time I start my machine it is in selective mode unless I select normal and hit apply... anyway, I think I got to the bottom of my problem. In safe mode, I deleted a file "acpiecc.sys" that was created on the same day my problems started. This allowed me to delete "core.cache.dsk" I restarted in normal mode and "core.cache.dsk" did not come back. I have control of my browser now... Can I delete the regestry entrys for "acpiecc"? I ran all the scans you recommended and they were negative for any problems. (combo fix, spybot, avg anti-spyware)
    Thanks again for your time...

If you have processes still blocked in the startup tab in msconfig, then it will stay in selective ...

Yes you can remove the reg keys related to acpiecc. As long as you make a backup of the registry first.
