same problem as k.smith (05-07-08): CTFMONB blue screen, Red BioHazard Desktop Screen, cockroach/beetles on screen, add constant crashing.

Whitebox system, Windows XP SP2. AMD Athlon 64, 2GB RAM. Clicked something I shouldn't have. Now infected and crashing. Before finding your site, I ran SpyBot successfully - deleted some things - no change. Installed Kaspersky Antivirus trial and Spy Emergency trial. Deleted, quarantined some things - no change.

Somewhere in there my system started crashing, BSOD with STOP: 0X000000FC code (trying to execute non-executable memory). The other codes that show up keep changing so I didn't bother to write them down - they disappear too quickly anyway. I am able to boot up to another HD in my system, so I don't think it's a physical memory problem.

I tried to follow the instructions and run the programs listed in your "READ & RUN ME FIRST" thread several times. They would run for a few seconds or up to 15 minutes before crashing. I was able to get a couple of log files, which I've attached. Whenever I boot up now, I get a "The system has recovered from a serious error" window, which I close. Then the bugs start again a few minutes later.

Can this be fixed or should I even bother?

    Welcome to Major Geeks!

I'm not sure if all your problems are related to malware. Let's fix what is visible and see what happens. We will also remove some software that is not malware to make sure it is not causing any issues. To that end, please uninstall immediately the below:
    LiveReg (Symantec Corporation)
    LiveUpdate 1.6 (Symantec Corporation)
    Norton Security Scan
    Spy Emergency
    SUPERAntiSpyware

You said Kaspersky is only a trial. Does that mean you had no antivirus program installed when this happened? I see alot of folders related to Symantec. Was it installed at some point in time? Or was it just from the above Norton Security Scan?

Did you have a problem trying to get Malwarebytes Anti-Malware to run?

Run C:\MGtools\analyse.exe by double clicking on it. This is really HijackThis (select Do a system scan only) and select the following lines but DO NOT CLICK FIX until you exit all browser sessions including the one you are reading in right now:

    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [QuickTime Task] "C:\Program Files\QuickTime\QTTask.exe" -atboottime
    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [SunJavaUpdateSched] "C:\Program Files\Java\jre1.6.0_06\bin\jusched.exe"
    O4 - HKUS\S-1-5-18\..\Run: [ATICCC] "C:\Program Files\ATI Technologies\ATI.ACE\cli.exe" runtime (User 'SYSTEM')
    O4 - HKUS\.DEFAULT\..\Run: [ATICCC] "C:\Program Files\ATI Technologies\ATI.ACE\cli.exe" runtime (User 'Default user')
    O6 - HKCU\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Control Panel present
    O20 - Winlogon Notify: wvUnmnol - wvUnmnol.dll (file missing)
    O21 - SSODL: wetkadmr - {5D9D3345-3C4F-4665-91A7-279D31476C84} - (no file)

    After clicking Fix, exit HJT.

Now we need to use ComboFix.
    • Make sure that combofix.exe that you downloaded while doing the READ & RUN ME is on your Desktop but Do not run it!
      • If it is not on your Desktop, the below will not work.
    • Open Notepad and copy/paste the text in the below quote box into it:
    • Save the above as CFscript.txt and make sure you save it to the same location (should be on your Desktop) as ComboFix.exe
    • At this point, you MUST EXIT ALL BROWSERS NOW before continuing!
    • You should have both the ComboFix.exe and CFScript.txt icons on your Desktop.
    • Now use your mouse to drag CFscript.txt on top of ComboFix.exe
    • Follow the prompts.
    • When it finishes, a log will be produced named c:\combofix.txt
    • I will ask for this log below
    Note:

Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.

Copy the bold text below to notepad. Save it as fixme.reg to your desktop. Be sure the "Save as" type is set to "all files" Once you have saved it double click it and allow it to merge with the registry.
Make sure that you tell me if you receive a success message about adding the above
to the registry. If you do not get a success message, it definitely did not work.

    Now run Ccleaner!

Now run the C:\MGtools\GetLogs.bat file by double clicking on it.

    Then attach the below logs:
    • C:\ComboFix.txt
    • C:\MGlogs.zip
Make sure you tell me how things are working now!

Holy cr*p! Thanks for replying so quickly. Ok, here's the scoop:

I did have Norton Antivirus 2004 installed but haven't been able to update the virus defs for weeks. I don't ever recall running the Norton Security scan.

The computer kept crashing when I tried to run Malwarebytes Anti-Malware.

When ComboFix rebooted the computer, the computer kept rebooting, so I went into Safe Mode, and it finished creating the log file. Was that ok? Then it let me get back into Normal Mode. I should mention, now that I notice it again, that the computer will occasionally try to access the floppy drive, this may be important (?).

Got a successful message to the Registry entry.

Will it run now? If so, attach a log from it.

Not sure! Does it still happen? When does it happen?

Your logs are clean, but I would like to see if MBAM finds anything.

Ran MBAM. it ran for 18 minutes and found 6 infected objects before the computer crashed. Will try again tomorrow.

    Thanks for your help!

Do you mean just now on a new scan? If yes, try running it in safe mode. Also try to write down what it is finding before the crash.

Ok, I think I screwed up. I ran MBAM (in Normal mode). When it found 3 infected objects, it didn't display the names, so I Paused the scan to see if I could use the other tabs to see the names. I couldn't until I Aborted. I was able to remove those infections and produce a log. I restarted it and the computer crashed. I reran it in Safe mode. It completed with 4 infections which I then removed. It created a log file which I can't find. I thought it would be in the same place as the first log, but it isn't. I am attaching what I found.

When I restarted in Normal mode, it still starts with the "The system has recovered from a serious error." window. Then crashes a few minutes later.

Your crashes may not be related to malware. You will have to write down and error messages and look at your EventViewer logs and report them in the Software Forum forum for some one to look at.

I do suggest that you do the below in either normal boot mode or safe boot mode (which ever way you can get it to run).

The registry code you gave me worked in Normal mode. Thank you for all your help. I will transfer my other problems to the Software forum.

    You're welcome.

If you are not having any other malware problems, it is time to do our final steps:
    1. If we had you use ComboFix, uninstall ComboFix (This uninstall will only work as written if you installed ComboFix on your Desktop & renamed it like we requested.)
      • Click START then RUN and enter the below into the run box and then click OK. Note the quotes are required
      • "%userprofile%\Desktop\cf" /u
        • Notes: The space between the cf" and the /u, it must be there.
        • This will uninstall ComboFix and also reset hidden files and folders settings back to Windows defaults.
      • Delete the C:\cf folder from combofix.
    2. If we used SmitFraudFix, you can delete all files and folders related to it now including the c:\rapport.txt log.
    3. If we used VundoFix, you can delete the VundoFix.exe file and the C:\VundoFix Backups folder and C:\vundofix.txt log that was created.
    4. If we had you run Avenger, you can delete all files related to Avenger now.
    5. If we had you download any registry patches like fixme.reg or fixWLK.reg (or any others), you can delete these files now.
    6. If running Vista, it is time to make sure you have reenabled UAC by double clicking on the C:\MGtools\enableUAC.reg file and allowing it to be added to the registry.
    7. Go to add/remove programs and uninstall HijackThis.
    8. You can delete the C:\MGtools folder and the C:\MGtools.exe file. You can also delete the C:\MGlogs.zip
    9. If you are running Vista, Windows XP or Windows ME, do the below:
      • Refer to the cleaning steps in the READ ME for your Window version and see the steps to Disable System Restore which will flush your Restore Points.
      • Then reboot and Enable System Restore to create a new clean Restore Point.
    10. After doing the above, you should work thru the below link:
