    Go to start, run, taskmgr.

    Click ok. Does that work?

If there is IRQ conflict, this can cause the Three-Finger salute from bringing up Task Manager. Also if there is a software or OS problem, this can cause it to not respond to Ctrl-Alt-Delete also.

Also try a Right click in the Toolbar, which should allow you to bring up the Task Manager, not the Windows Security screen to ask if you wish to logoff/Shutdown, if setup as WinXP Non-Classic.

Yeh that works but not the combo of the keys, I wonder if my keyboard is running out of batteries? I have the same problem with my F8 key but I plugged in my buddies keyboard and that worked I run and get new batteries tomorrow, other than that can you think of anything else?

If the keyboard is Wireless, then that could be a problem. I would get a wired PS-2 keyboard and try it, due to sounding like a hardware issue now that you have given more information.

    Task Manager - Control/Alt/Delete - Doesn't work

Lift Restrictions - TM, Regedit and CMD (Line 275)
    http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/xp_tweaks.htm

Enable the Task Manager (Line 51)
    http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/xp_tweaks.htm

Check your settings here: For Pro

Start/Run/gpedit.msc. User Configuration/Administrative Templates/System/Crtl+Alt+Del Options. In the right pane double click Remove Task Manager and enable it.

Also, if you have disabled the Alerter Service, CAD will be disabled. If neither of these are the case and the Task Manager only opens for a few seconds, then closes:

This behavior can be caused by a virus. One of three:

    http://securityresponse.symantec.com/avcenter/venc/data/w32.spybot.worm.html
    http://securityresponse.symantec.com/avcenter/venc/data/w32.klez.gen@mm.html
    http://securityresponse.symantec.com/avcenter/venc/data/w32.yaha.e@mm.html

If this is not the case: Check your settings here

Taskmgr.exe should be listed in the %SystemRoot%\system32 directory. If you cannot find the file, you can extract it from the Windows XP CD. To do so, you can perform the following steps:

    a. Insert your Windows XP CD into your CD-ROM.
    b. Click Start, Run, type cmd and press Enter.
    c. At the Command Prompt mode, type the following command:

For example, if the drive letter of your CD-ROM is F, you can type the following commands:

    F:
    cd \i386
    expand taskmgr.ex_ %SystemRoot%\SYSTEM32\taskmgr.exe

If it is a policy setting, run this edit:

Enable the Task Manager (Line 113)
    http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/xp_tweaks.htm

Restore Task Manager, Msconfig and Regedit:

This worm disables NAV, Msconfig, Regedit and Task Manager:
    http://www.bitdefender.com/bd/site/virusinfo.php?menu_id=1&v_id=114

Rename regedit.exe to regedit.com then: Download then Merge the edit on line 251 then delete all the files mentioned in the above link. http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/xp_tweaks.htm

To use the Regedit: Save the REG File to your hard disk. Double click it and answer yes to the import prompt. REG files can be viewed in Notepad by right clicking on the file and selecting Edit.

Do a search of your system for msconfigs.exe & p2pnetwork.exe. It stops Ctrl+Alt+Delete, RegEdit & some other programs from launching. I had this recently, I followed this guys directions & it was gone. Follow them to the letter or it will just keep reinstalling itself.

I'm copying this from another forum, I hope that's ok. I would say not to worry about running HijackThis, but that's up to you & read the forums rules about HijackThis before posting the results here.. :D

I was having the exact same prob the tips on this page finally resolved it for me:
    http://www.pcguide.com/vb/showthread.php?t=37182&goto=nextnewest

First, from Add/Remove Programs, uninstall newnet If there is no entry for it, an uninstaller can be found on the newnet website. http://www.newdotnet.com/removal.html

    Download Hijack This http://files4.majorgeeks.com/files/2e626277f946a25463ebae27f7cac1d5/spyware/hijackthis.zip

Have Hijack This fix all of the following by placing a check in the appropriate boxes and hitting fix checked. Make sure all browser and all Windows Explorer windows are closed before fixing.

    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [MsConfigs] C:\Program Files\MsConfigs\MsConfigs.exe
    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [p2pnetwork] p2pnetwork.exe
    O4 - HKLM\..\RunServices: [p2pnetwork] p2pnetwork.exe
    O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [p2pnetwork] p2pnetwork.exe
    O4 - HKCU\..\RunServices: [p2pnetwork] p2pnetwork.exe

    Reboot and delete

    files
    p2pnetwork.exe

    folders
    C:\Program Files\MsConfigs

    hope that helps
