    Hi,
We got a recurring pop up saying we had a virus and avast didn't help.
    So...
I've tried to follow all the steps in the malware removal guide.
I ran AVG but had no option to save a log file. (was greyed out).
    Bitdefender would not run.
I think everything else went as directed.
I am attaching the reports from Panda Activescan, runkeys and newfiles. I will post the HijackThis log in a reply'
I hope I have done this correctly.
Any help would be most welcome.

    Welcome to Major Geeks!

Run this Disable/Remove Windows Messenger to remove Windows Messenger. Do not confuse Windows Messenger with MSN Messenger because they are not the same. Windows Messenger is a frequent cause of popups.

Now uninstall the below two programs:
    Viewpoint Manager (Remove Only)
    Viewpoint Media Player

Run HijackThis (select Do a system scan only) and select the following lines but DO NOT CLICK FIX until you exit all browser sessions including the one you are reading in right now:
    R0 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Local Page =

    After clicking Fix, exit HJT.

Copy the bold text below to notepad. Save it as fixme.reg to your desktop. Be sure the "Save as" type is set to "all files" Once you have saved it
double click it and allow it to merge with the registry.
Now download The Avenger by Swandog46, and save it to your Desktop.
    • Extract avenger.exe from the Zip file and save it to your desktop
    • Run avenger.exe by double-clicking on it.
    • Check the 'Input script manually' box.
    • Click on the magnifying glass icon.
    • Copy everything in the Quote box below, and paste it in the box that opens:
    • Now click the 'Done' button.
    • Click on the traffic light icon and OK the prompt.
    • You will be prompted to restart, OK the prompt and your PC should reboot, if not, reboot it yourself.
    • A log file from Avenger will be produced at C:\avenger.txt
Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune. This program does not require an installation. The executable actually runs the program.

NOTE: This program is for Windows XP and Windows 2000 only. ATF Cleaner will remove all files from the items that are checked so if you have some cookies you'd like to save. Please move them to a different directory first.
    • Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
    • Under Main choose: Select All
    • Click the Empty Selected button.
    If you use Firefox browser
    • Click Firefox at the top and choose: Select All
    • Click the Empty Selected button.
      • NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click No at the prompt.
    If you use Opera browser
    • Click Opera at the top and choose: Select All
    • Click the Empty Selected button.
      • NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click No at the prompt.
Click Exit on the Main ATF Cleaner menu to close the program.

Now attach the below new logs and tell me how the above steps went.

    1. Avenger
    2. GetRunKey
    3. ShowNew
    4. HJT

Make sure you tell me how things are working now!

Chaslang, first let me say that you are awesome for taking the time to help us with this, thanks a lot.
I have done all the steps listed except downloading and running ATF cleaner as I can't get an internet
    connection (wireless) at the moment.
Also HijackThis did not show the following two listings:
    O2 - BHO: (no name) - {E94428CB-FBF3-4C87-862A-86FB0EC0712C} - C:\WINDOWS\system32\ddcyv.dll
    O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [MSMSGS] "C:\Program Files\Messenger\msmsgs.exe" /background
There was one similar to the first (E944 etc. was different but C:\WINDOWS etc was the same.)
    I did not select it.
Also I am still getting pop ups saying there are trojans and viruses.
I will reply again as soon as I can finish the directions.

  5. chaslang

chaslang MajorGeeks Admin - Master Malware Expert Staff Member

    You're welcome.

Then manually delete all files in the below two folders. Windows may block removal of a couple of items from the current date so you will need to work around that.
    C:\WINDOWS\Temp
    C:\Documents and Settings\HP_Owner\Local Settings\Temp

The trojan may have renamed the file. It can do this at each reboot or power down.

Just finish all steps and attach the new logs. Then do not power down or reboot. ;)

  6. dograt1234

    dograt1234 Private E-2

Well the pop ups are getting worse and computer has slowed to crawl.
I finally managed to complete all the steps and here are the logs.
shownew ran for several minutes and never seemed to complete.

Each user account has to be clean separately. If you are posting logs now from a different user account, it will not completely help the other account. Each account has their own registry entries to clean. So are these logs from a different account.

  9. dograt1234

    dograt1234 Private E-2

Oops, yes these are from a different account.
Shall I repeat the steps on the original account and post the logs?
    dograt

  10. chaslang

chaslang MajorGeeks Admin - Master Malware Expert Staff Member

The procedure I worked up was based on your original logs which were for the USERNAME=HP_Owner, that is the one you need to run the fix in message # 3 on and then attach new logs for the HP_Owner account.

  11. chaslang

chaslang MajorGeeks Admin - Master Malware Expert Staff Member

Note however that since you have logged into other accounts and have more than likely rebooted the computer, the fix for HP_Owner will more than likely not work 100%. I already see at least a few new files to delete, like the below:

    C:\WINDOWS\system32\rxxwwpke.exe
    C:\WINDOWS\system32\afnvlkhv.dll
    C:\WINDOWS\system32\cjxflech.dll
    C:\WINDOWS\system32\cjxflech.dllbox

And other registry keys may now be in place too.

You can try doing the below on the account named Mom
This may or may not help the other accounts completely.

    • Click on the traffic light icon and OK the prompt.
    • You will be prompted to restart, OK the prompt and your PC should reboot, if not, reboot it yourself.
    • A log file from Avenger will be produced at C:\avenger.txt

Those are all clean. You should now log out of this account (don't use switch user, use log off) and then login to your other accounts to check them. You posted logs the other day for the mom account that was infected.

Check to see if any other accounts are having problems. Work only one at a time. You should attach the below logs for each account needing work but again only one account should be worked on until it is finished and then you can move on to the next account.

There are issues with Spybot in that it has a problem removing certain registry entries it finds related to Vundo. I will need the Spybot log to give you a fix for this since some of the entries will be in specific locations based upon user ID numbers that are unique to each user account. Attach the log.

Then reboot. After reboot run a new Spybot scan and if it still finds Vundo issues attach a new log. To save a log just right click in the scan window and you will see the options needed.

If any of the above are still present, we will need to use a tool to modifiy registry ownership and permissions to remove them.

I have no hardwire on this PC, just wireless.
It is mostly intermittant connections, sometimes slow.
Wireless interface says there is a connection (sometimes takes a long time aquiring an IP address)
Lately the internet explorer software is having problems. It will usually load after a reboot but then the second time it won't launch, then when I shut down the PC I often get an error message saying
    END PROGRAM
    I EXPLORER .EXE
then a program is not responding message that closes when I click end now.
I think this has been happening since the malware infection.

This may not be due to any remaining malware. Let's run another couple of tools and get some new logs to see if anything else is hiding or has come back.

    Download this file - combofix.exe
    1. Double click combofix.exe & follow the prompts.
    2. When finished, it will produce a log ( C:\combofix.txt ) for you. Attach this log to your next reply See: HOW TO: Attach Items To Your Post
    Note:

Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.

Your logs are clean. If you are not having any other malware problems, it is time to do our final steps:
    1. If we used Pocket Killbox during your cleanup, do the below
      • Run Pocket Killbox and select File, Cleanup, Delete All Backups
    2. If we used ComboFix, you can delete the ComboFix.exe file, C:\ComboFix folder, C:\QooBox folder, C:\WINDOWS\nircmd.exe, C:\combofix.txt and C:\ComboFix-quarantined-files.txt logs that was created.
    3. If we user SDFix you can delete all the SDFix related files and folders from your Desktop or whereever you installed it.
    4. If we used SmitFraudFix, you can delete all files and folders related to it now including the c:\rapport.txt log.
    5. If we used VundoFix, you can delete the VundoFix.exe file and the C:\VundoFix Backups folder and C:\vundofix.txt log that was created.
    6. If we had your run FixWareOut, you can delete the Fixwareout.exe file and the C:\fixwareout folder.
    7. If we had you run Avenger, you can delete all files related to Avenger now.
    8. If we had you download any registry patches like fixme.reg or fixWLK.reg (or any others), you can delete these files now.
    9. You can delete the ShowNew.Zip and GetRunkey.Zip files and the files that you extracted from the ZIP files. You can also delete the C:\newfiles.txt and C:\runkeys.txt logs that were created
    10. If you are running Windows XP or Windows ME, do the below:
      • go back to step 8 of the READ & RUN ME to Disable System Restore which will flush your Restore Points.
      • Then reboot and Enable System Restore to create a new clean Restore Point.
    11. After doing the above, you should work thru the below link:

    O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [mciaest] RunDll32.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\mciaest.dll,Setup
    O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [QuickTime Task] "C:\Program Files\QuickTime\qttask.exe" -atboottime

Then you should attach a new HJT log for this account just so we can be sure that the above get removed.

    One last thing.
The account I just tested has an ini. file on the desktop.:confused
When I open it up in notepad it says:
    [MAIN]
    Bandwith=160

I have no idea what this is or how she put it here.
Do you know what it could be and whether it is ok to delete?
(Sorry if this is off topic)
