You know how when you're on Craig's List and you want to reply to an ad, it launches your email client, which by default is Outlook Express (or Outlook if Office is installed). How do I change this to GMail or Yahoo mail? I've gone to the Programs tab in the IE options/tools section, but it only gives Hotmail as a non-Outlook email.
    Thanks!

(I know I've done this before, and it's probably really easy, but I'm battling a virulent flu and I'm all hopped up on 5 kinds of uber-quil and omni-tab so I'm a bit hazy LOL )

I dont believe what you want to do can be done.

But let me make sure I understand.

You want to click on a mailto: tag, and have yahoo or gmail automatically launch a new message?

Most likely - in the way you are thinking, this cant be done. ie - you cant click on <a href="mailto:baba@booey.com">this link</a> and expect Gmail to load up a window to send a new message to an email account. Web based mail clients dont work that way.

What you COULD do , if this works for you, is configure a regular mail client (like outlook express / outlook) to be setup to access your gmail / yahoo account... most of them support pop/imap access. Doing this, you could click "mailto" tags and have your email launch a window to compose a new message.

Ummm, yes it can be done in Firefox.

It is done with this extension: "Mailfrom" https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/6354 it lets you pick AOL, Gmail or Yahoo mail. Just right click on the email address and it takes you to the email client or webpage you have chosen.

Thanks for all the info! Good stuff! Novice: the info you provided is great, but a bit outdated. The KB article only references IE5.0 and earlier, but it's on the right track and if I wasn't in an ultra-fed medication induced stupor, I could probably apply the info to newer versions of IE... but I'm still not really clear headed (I hate being sick :cry ). Buck_nekid: the dude using the PC is like 80 and not exactly really savvy, but I think if I set it up for him and show him how to do it once or twice, it shouldn't be a problem. @thebigd: thanks, but due to the limited abilities of the PCs owner, this method may be over his head, but I'll give it a go myself before I push him into it and I can gauge if it's simple to use after it's been implemented.
    :-D
    Thanks again!

Checked at gmail. Google says to make gmail the default, you need to have the following installed: http://www.majorgeeks.com/Gmail_Notifier_d4373.html

Yahoo! says to make it the default, you need to do what you have already tried. For what it's worth I tried the same thing with the same results, no AT&T Yahoo! Mail options listed under programs.
