Defrag is not working?

Hello,

I am running windows 98 version 1, yeah I know I should upgrade. I have Spysweeper, NAV internet security 2005, Spybot tea timer and task scheduler as part of my start up.

When I try and run a defrag on the C drive it stays at 0% no matter how long I run defrag. Cvtaplog is running the same time I run the defrag as well. I did a search on the net and some sites says this is a trojan and others say it is required when running a defrag?

I have disabled NAV and Spysweeper in hopes that defrag would work but it did not.

Any suggestions?

Go to this site and scroll about halfway down and download Win ME defrag zip file. Works great on win 98. Kill all processes except system tray before defraging.

 

I had this prob once with my Win 98 OS and what worked was try defraging in Safe Mode

all of the above are good idea's..I usually shut down all running processes to defrag in win98. Ctrl alt del and then shut down everything except explorer before you run it.
best bet is probably the winME defragger though. it runs much faster than running defrag in safe mode

 

Gaah! - halfway thru responding and my flying finger hit the power button on the keyboard 5 minutes ago - hope it did not stuff up this site.
Anyway I agree that the ME version defragger is a great imporvement over the W98 defragger but when I had W98 I found it still necessary to close down all background progs except explorer and systray in order to defrag.
Then I discovered diskeeper Lite (Free) and used it and found it much better - perhaps you should give that a try instead.
