    Hello folks,

Please bear with me as I am a new member of Major Geeks...
This may be a common question I don't know?

I wish to delete material which I thought I had deleted completely from my drives through the recycle bin.

Just recently, I did what most folk do from time to time-delete files I shouldn’t have! Major Geeks came to my aid by recommending I use "Undelete Plus" to recover them, and it did brilliantly!

What I also found too obviously was thousands of files deleted over the course of time including lots of sensitive stuff...

What can Major Geeks recommend I use to completely delete this stuff to please?

Much appreciated for your help. Major Geeks is superb!!! :

    Hi and Welcome

You can use Eraser to wipe free space securely from your PC, just click File > New Task

But word of warning while using these types of file erasers, they are perminent, so its always advisable to backup all your current data/files before running.

What you can do which for is a bit of a safer option is to install CCleaner and use its secure file erasing as a way of securly deleting whats in the recycle bin whe your clearing that out, in CCleaners normal run of clearing junk/temps and the bin, this doesnt do free space though, which is whats needed for already deleted files, but can be used from a now on standpoint.

    Hello Halo,

Thank you for your prompt reply tio my enquiry about deleting deleted files permanently from my drives.

Will the Eraser software you recommended show the deleted files I wish to remove. Or will it just delete everything including stuff I haven't deleted, per se?

    thanks again,

    Steve

    Hi

The wipe free space part of Eraser just wipes the free space that windows has allocated as ready to accept new data, which is what basically happens then you delete a file/s all that happens is that the headers to these files are allocated as now ok to write over, they are not fully removed, which is why you can recover them at times, before the file blocks on the HD are overwritten with new data.

Eraser in its wipe free space option I mentioned will just file erase the sections of your HD with no data, or with data flagged as deleted, it will take some time to complete depending on your HD size.

If you have not deleted files then if will not remove them.

Ment to mention where in CCleaner the secure deletion is as I prefer this method od securely removing data, over free space wiping, in CCleaner goto Options > Settings and choose the Secure Deletion Slower, in the drop down box choose the method and these are written to DOD and NSA standards of file erasure ( so be clear you never wish to recover these files ).

Then when you run the Cleaner in CCleaner all the files, deleted in the recycle bin, Temps, Internet Temps, Cookies etc are all securely removed.

    Dear Halo,

I promised to update you in regard to my endeavours to erase all sensitive data from the free space on my HD.

To refresh you, as a professional photographer, ( google ref Steve Knott) I have become paranoid about sensitive data on my pc after a high incidence of burgleries in my street.

You kindly offerd some excellent advice and recommended that I download Eraser and CC Cleaner from your fabulous site

Well, suffice to say, a week on I am thrilled to tell you
that all the said data has now been 'overwritten' if that's the word and hopefully I need worry no more.

To protect and back up my valuable current work I have also bought
Western Digitals excellent 250gig portable hard drive which I secrete under the floorboards!

Incidentally I also downloaded another program 'Ultrawipe' from Major Geeks which seems to do the same job with an added feature alllowing me to erase free space memory.
After a heavy day scanning when my drive has used lots of space I ran this a couple of timesand it really seems to recover
space on my drives? Is this function harmful at all?
Perhaps you could explain this a little ( in your own time!)

Many many thanks once again Halo!!

    Kind regards,

    Steve Knott

    Hi Steve

Glad your happy with the software suggested, yes data protection is a great subject and one where as a computer user in this electronic age we do need to be careful, not only to protect copyright, but also for protecting our identities.

Not used Ultrawipe, but if it wipes HD Space over RAM Memory, then this is fine and basically what Eraser does in its Free Space cleaning, Ultra Wipe cannot harm much but as I mentioned and your already doing with the WD Portable HD ( I love these too if its the Passport Drive you have ) is to backup your data, as no method to cleaning data is foolproof and "could" on rare occasions erase wrong things...

If RAM Memory cleaning then you would only need to use an application to wipe ram if your PC was not turned off, if you turn the PC off then ram is flushed.

    many thanks for the update
    David

Good stuff David, excellent; we've got a bit in common! I bet you are a Photoshop Master! I'm a wildlife photographer myself making every 'bullet ' count-still using film would you believe it!

Scanning slides at 4000dpi to produce 55mb files on a Nikon LS5000-
Ive just forked out a small fortune on a superb 500mm big telephoto to hopefully stun a stampeding black rhino at 20 yards!

Desperate to go digital really but cant afford it; my UK Agent www.Alamy.com need huge uninterpolated 50mb files...ouch...
    A lot of money.

Lets keep in- touch! Much appreciated once again.

    Cheerio, Steve
