Dell M70 Laptop with thin verticle lines on display

Startup screen with windows icon has thin white vertical lines. When computer would normally go to desktop, display is completely blacked out. Can hear the harddrive working. I assume the computer is functioning correctly other than the display.
Started computer with different monitor, and got nothing on display, not even the vertical line portion.
Have limited knowledge of computers so would appreciate any ideas.

 

I would say a bad video card or lcd display.

Also something may have come loose in the laptop.

From what you are saying I think it's a video card issue.
