dell vostro 1700 laptop

    need help guys, my dell vostro 1700 laptop will not boot, when i put vista disc in it installs but wont reboot, it goes through the motions and the stops on black screen with the cursor showing.
    when i put xp disc in it says there is no hdd present
    whats up?
