Public Alpha Release Notes Version 0.5 Beta
The DesertCombat team is pleased to annouce the seventh major public release of DesertCombat. We would like to thank our Beta team and fans for all the feedback.

Public Beta 0.5 features a slew of bug fixes and additions aimed at creating on of the best war game experiances on the PC. In this stage of development each is roughly balanced with some minor advantages to each, making gameplay much more fun and exciting.

Know issues with the Beta .5

Optimization
Since this mod is a work in progress, some optimizations have been made to the models for performance. You might experience a slight slowdown due to the fact that we haven’t done a full optimization pass yet.

Balancing
Currently the game feels balanced, but some things may destroy objects faster then they should, the game will continually balance out as the mod progresses. This goes for speed of vehicles, weapon damage and amount of ammo.

Airplane and Helicopters
Not all planes have a new cockpit yet, this is a work in progress.

Maps
Only maps that display a small DC logo in them have DC vehicles. This is only temporary until new maps are created. Some new DC maps do not support single player yet, coming soon.
Battle of Eastings, does support it though.

Just over 2 hour to go for me.

 

This new mod rocks. Most vehicles have a more refined feel to them. Weapon damage is more accurate and I just love the way the Sabot round from the M1A1 flies through the sky. The shards from the round leave the barrel of the tank just as they should. Striking another tank looks fairly impressive as well. The suppressed CAR-15 is a welcome addition to the Spec Ops class along with the new mini-scope it has.

Sounds have been changed as well, or shall I say.......tweaked. Again, tanks have a noticeable track noise, explosion sounds are about the same. The .50 Cals have a deeper sound to them, just as they should.

The new Harrier skins and weapon load outs are just awesome. I'm a ground pounder but the aircraft seem a bit more user friendly and forgiving. I actually flew AND landed an Apache without burning in. They have added in a cloud line that you can fly through. Take off, gain altitude and you can climb through it. You can continue until you reach your destination then dive down through the clouds to hit your target. Similar to the 'coming out of the sun' technique used in WWII and such. The old 'flying into the white fog' days are over.

TOW missiles seem to do a bit more damage to armor, but depending on where you hit them. Hit a tank in the front and you can expect to expend about four rockets before knocking it out. Hit it from the rear, or on the front below the armor line and it's gone in just a couple of shots. That reminds me. Hit that Russian troop carrier ( I call it the Aqua Buggy....it's the Soviet equivalent to the Bradley ) right in the turret with the M1A1 and it just desintigrates. No more getting killed by the Buggy while your pumping half of your rounds into it.

The Hummer ( no pun intended ) has been refined just a bit. It isn't near the clamoring, bouncing buggy that it was before. It actually has fairly descent control now but it will still take you 1/2 of an acre to turn around.

The Opposition has a new Anti Aircraft truck equiped with six point and shoot rockets. It also has a RADAR dish on the top of it. Nifty but I don't like it. The same goes for the Opposition's new helicopter. It's nothing more than a troop transport and has NO weapons. Fly and land this one in a safe area only, or you will find yourself waiting for the Spawn timer to reach zero.

I have a question.

Not that I'm dumb or anything, but am I supposed to delete the DC folder I have now before installing the new one? I have tried both ways and nothing. It just crashes. 3 different files from 3 different locations same thing.

usually fileplanet's public servers have a wait of around 40 min. but there's no wait right now. Don't know how long it will last though.

 

Is anyone else having a problem with the SA-3 Sam Site? or maybe i'm doing something wrong? I fire a missle and it immediately crashes the game to the desktop. i've done a search through all the DC forums, but it seems that no one else is having this problem.

 

is this a free game? or is this an expansion/mod of another game?


also... is 128MB video (geforce 4 ti4400) good enough to run this game smoothly?

Desert Combat is free, but BF1942 isn't. You have to have BF1942 to play DC.

You should be able to use a geforce 4 ti4400 smoothly. I use the onboard graphics (geforce2 mx 200). its not great, but it isn't choppy and it works for me.

 

i just got this over the weekend. i'm still getting used to it. i can't fly the heli as well as i could, but now i can atleast do a little dog fighting and carpet bombing.

 

It's free but you need BF1942 to play it.

thats the best deal out there now.

I run it on a Ti4200 and it runs smooth (just cant run full 1024x768 with 32 bit color) stick with 1024x768 @ 16 bit and you'll be fine.
