desktop background hidden

I have Windows XP running on a newer system with P4 1.8 CPU, 533 RAM. For no apparent reason, a "blank" box appeared on my desk top (like a short cut icon) with an "X" on top - I tried to remove it / open it etc. and in the process the picture I set as my background disappeared - the screen is now just blue, the existing short cut icons etc are all there, and screen saver etc. work as normal. I have attempted to reset defaults, put a new pictures as background and nothing works - when I click refresh I see the picture for an instant, then it disappears. I've run bit defender thinking it might be a virus, Norton and X soft - no help - this is something stupid I have done and can't "undo" - I would sincerely appreciate any suggestions!!

 

Check your active desktop settings.

Start --> Settings --> Control Panel --> Display (You may need to switch to classic view on xp)

Select the 'Desktop' Tab

Click 'Customize Desktop'

Click the 'Web' Tab

Ensure all items in the box are UNchecked and delete all items except 'My Current Home Page"

CLick 'OK' --> 'Apply'

If your desktop hasn't reappeared then reselect the image from the 'Desktop' tab and click 'Apply' again.
