I dropped a picture on my desktop and some msg cam up about resizing it, so I clicked yes(not sure now exactly what msg said) and now ALL my desktop icons names are highlighted. I tryed messing around with display but cant seem to get rid of it unless I change the background to the same color as the highlighting.

Anyone got any tips on this weird problem?

    Thanks,

    JOE

Ummm, isn't this normal? If you use a solid color background (such as when you choose 'none' under display properties/desktop->background), there doesn't appear to be any highlighting, since by default the highlighting is the same colour as the rest of the background. But, as soon as you use any type of picture for a background, the highlighting becomes apparent. You can even choose different colours for the highlighting in the display properties/desktop folder. Otherwise you run the risk of not seeing the icon name if it blends into the background.

rebooting the pc doesnt work. I am understand the colour of the font and all that, but what the problem here is the name of the file, (eg. My Computer), is black with a HIGHLIGHTED box around it. This highlighted box is on ALL my icons. I tryed changing the font colour and the it changes colour of the font, but nothing to the box. When you left click a icon and the name goes highlighted, its just like that, in a blue box. I do not have any selected and the icon itself is not highlighted. Although ALL the names are highlighted ALL the time, not just when I click on it.

p.s. I am running xp pro with SP1(yeah still)

This is just the guess of a simple man, but I do a lot of photo editing and I'm thinking that the photo you downloaded may have had a "frame" placed around it, and when you shrunk the photo that "frame" command somehow translated to everything on your desktop.

Otherwise, why not just blow away the photo (or move it to a disk) and see if things return to normal?

    Good luck

yes this is most likely what it is..I deleted the picture but the icon names are still framed. Changing the desktop backround does nothing other then if I change it to the same color as the frame around the lettering, then of course if its the same colour its gone. gotta be a better way to fix it.

ok yes it changes the color of the highlight, but its still there. I can make the highlighting or frame around the name by doing that. anyway to remove the frame all together?...as I am not clicking on the icons and yet all the file names are still lit up.

    Joe Bean,
Right Click somwhere on a blank desktop space.
    Select :-
    - Properties
    - Desktop
    - Custom Desktop
    - then the 'Web' tab
    Untick "Lock Desktop Items"
    Click :-
    OK
    Apply
    OK

and it should ALL be done.
We have had the same problem here in the UK and this has resolved the problem.

if that doesn't work, (assuming you're using XP) go to Start > Control Panel > System. Click the Advanced Tab, then the Settings button. Make sure that the "Use drop shadows for icon labels on the desktop" option is checked.
