    Hey there all-
I just joined today- I've got a laundry list of problems so I'll try to keep it brief. My laptop at startup attempts to install SPSS 12.0 (which was installed 4 yrs ago-no disk in drive that should prompt this). It will continuously cycle, I continuously cancel install. I've tried to uninstall the program, but I can't open install/uninstall programs (Windows XP SP2). I was having problems getting updates uploaded in AVG 7.5, but just upgraded to 8.0 (Internet Security). When it ran the first scan last night, it didn't finish and the log shows a "scan log corrupt" error. I've contact AVG about it (we'll see if I actually hear back from them this time!!). Its been suggested that I run HiJackThis, but I can't launch any of those files I've downloaded from your website and others (runtime error) My uneducated guess is that something very cranky is on my system and it won't let me fix it!! Any ideas, or should I just be shopping for a new laptop so I can write my thesis without lots of tears and cussing??

    Thanks-
I look forward to hearing from you guys!!
    Heidi

    Welcome to Major Geeks!

The first issue with SPSS is not a malware problem. It is really an issue for the Software Forum. I suggest that you post about that there.

The issue with Add/Remove programs not working may also not be malware but we will have to determine this by running cleaning procedures.

Again this may or may not be due to malware.

HijackThis is far from the first step and we don't want you to run it on your own. It is built into our MGtools program. Have you acutally tried ALL steps in the READ & RUN ME sticky. Some tools (like MGtools) do not need an installation and will typically run while others may not. We need some logs in order for us to really give you any correct guidance. From things that you have posted thus far, it sounds more like you have problems within your Windows OS, but malware can cause all kinds of problems which is why we need to have scans run and see logs. Without the logs we are basically blind and can do nothing but guess and guessing can make your PC unbootable.
