Digital picture organization software

Does anyone know of a good preferrably free software program to organize digital pictures?

I have some in using a kodak program.. some using a publisher program.. and several just scattered around my pc.. I need to get them all organized and backed up to disc.

Picasa is one option. I haven't used it but I understand it automatically re-organizes your photos immediately upon being installed. For that reason, I'm leery of installing it; I don't want my photos re-arranged. But, in your case, it may be a good choice. I see you can get it at http://www.majorgeeks.com/Picasa2_d4476.html

Again, I haven't used it. Maybe someone can confirm what I said above, or suggest other software.
