    Hi
    New to the forum :wave

    I'm not able to play any sound at all, apart in Adobe Audition.

    This is the prompt that get when trying to play mp3 via Winamp.
    "Bad DirectSound driver - DirectSound v2.42(d) error".

    Also my volume control has disappeared and all options in Control Panel > Sound + Devices grayed-out.

    Questions is, where can I fidn the DirectSound driver?
    I've already tryed re-installing Winamp and DirectX (v10 i think).
    Running XP.

    First, are there any Devices in Device Manager showing up with a ? or ! in front of them?

    Second, check that Windows Audio Service is started.
    Go to Control Panel>Administrative Tools>Services
    Scroll down the list of services until you find the Windows Audio service.
    Right click on it and choose Properties.
    Make sure it is set to Automatic and Start is checked.

    And third, post a make and model # if your PC is manufactured (Dell, Gateway, HP, etc.) or your motherboard ID, if it is a build. Or even better:
    Use Everest to get a report of your system’s hardware, OS, and drivers. Upload the report as an attachment
    Everest: http://www.majorgeeks.com/download.php?det=4181
    When Everest is done scanning, click "Report" at the top of the Everest window, click next to get to "Report Profile", select "Hardware related pages", click next, select "Plain Text", click "Finish". Then when it is done processing, click "Save To File". Save it where you want to. (I would use Desktop.)
    Click "Go Advanced" in the MG reply box, scroll down a little way until you see "Manage Attachments", click it, browse to your file, click "Upload", and close the window. Then submit the post. You may have to also type something in the reply box, like, "Here's my report.", so that it will submit

    1) Would that be the same as Sounds and Audio Devices? Checked and none are marked with ? or !.

    2) It was set on Automatic but the start button is grayed-out.

    3) The computer I'm trying to fix isn't connected to the internet, so the software you supplied wouldn't run.
    Its a Fujitsu Siemens / SCALEO P running on Pentium4 XP

    Device Manager for bad drivers.
    For XP: Go to Start>Control Panel> System. On the Hardware tab, click Device Manager, then click the plus sign in front of Sound, Video, Game Controllers.
    In Device Manager, if there is a ? in front of your audio device, that means no audio driver is installed.
    A ! means driver installation attempted but with problems.

    If you have the driver disc that came with your PC, if it had one, try reinstalling the the chipset driver and the audio driver.

    Didn't see ? or ! listed in front of anything at all.

    Tried installing the Drivers & Utilities CD but got the following prompt:
    "remove ATI CONTROL PANEL first ... !" What is ATI control Panel and should I remove it or would that make things worst?

    Also I have a Creative SB X-Fi sound card, if that makes any difference at all.

    That makes a big difference.
    You didn't say which X-Fi you have, so here is a link to Creative, choose your model, download the driver to the PC you are using to get online with, then save it to a CD or USB Flash drive and transfer it to the other PC.
    http://support.creative.com/Products/Products.aspx?catid=209&catName=X-Fi

    If you don't use it, you can uninstall it, or at least disable it in Device Manager. ATI, some times interfers with audio drivers.
    Also, look in Control Panel>Sounds and Audio and check to see if ATI or Creative is set as your default sound playback. Set it to Creative , if it shows there.

    One of the things I done once I got this problem was to uninstall/reinstall the CD that came with the sound card. That didn't make any difference at all.

    Thanks, guess I'll remove ATI.

    All options are grayed-out on devices (including apply button). Everything is listed and labeled as "working properly".
    Also, another weird thing is no program sees any sound card apart from Adobe Audition.

    It really sounds like there is no sound driver installed. It must have gotten corrupted.

    I just removed ATI control panel and installed the Drivers CD that came with the PC. Still no sign of the volume control.

    any other suggestions?

    although, this is an older post, check it out. have you visited the sb forums?

    http://forums.majorgeeks.com/showthread.php?t=61846&highlight=sb+live <-- soundblaster live problems

    have you uninstalled your sb card? if not, i'd remove the drivers, shut down the comp. remove your sound card, boot, up. maybe run ccleaner, then run ccleaner to clean the registry, reboot, then maybe try to get your onboard audio going, or try to get you sb card going. just my .02 worth. g/l, sos (however, muskies the sound guru!! :p)

    As well, you never did follow up on Musksnipes;
    I've recently read in someones signature on some Help Forum (Similar to;) "If you want answers, answer the questions posed to you"

    sosaman Sergeant Major

    they kinda answered...

    since you are able to access the internet you can d/l everest, and either use a thumbdrive, or cd, etc, etc, to copy it over to the comp your working on. then you can save the exported file, back to thumbdrive, etc, to upload here. - sos

    I don't see how removing the sound card and placing it back in slot would make any difference, though I'm leaving that as the last option.
    Thanks for your help. I tried re-installing XP and I got this message;
    "The file iaStor.sys could not be found."
    someone said its got something to do with a raid drive or something but I'm not sure what a raid drive is.

  15. LessBluff

    LessBluff Private E-2

    I transfered it to the other PC via my iPod, but in order for it to run it needs to access the net for some reason or the other.

  16. sosaman

    sosaman Sergeant Major

    do you have a "sata" hard drive? the last comp that i worked on had a sata drive, but i did not have to install any raid drivers.

    here is some reading material. maybe someone will come along and know what it is.

    if i was reinstalling the os, i would have pulled out the card prior. just like if you have extra h/d's installed, it's best to remove them prior to instaling the os. i would do this to ensure a clean install, then put in your card, etc. but, of course, that's your call.

    i have everest as well, and i've never seen it want to access the internet (although, it' been a while since i've last installed it). anyway, g/l - sos

    Yes but I (and probably Musksnipe) was hoping to see information along the lines of;

    Motherboard:
    Motherboard Name Intel Brownsville D845GBV / Brownsville 2 D845GEBV2 / Rexburg D845GRG / Rexburg 2 D845GERG2
    Motherboard Chipset Intel Brookdale-G i845GEV

    Multimedia:
    Audio Adapter Creative SB Live! Sound Card

    Re: Everest wanting to access the internet, did you just transfer the link, or did you download the Everest Setup file first and then transfer that to the machine?

  18. LessBluff

    LessBluff Private E-2

    yeah that does make sense, well i managed to have XP start installing.
    i hope it works.
    thanks for all the help. i also tried running everest again it said it was trying to connect to everest.com to send driver info or something like that.

  19. LessBluff

    LessBluff Private E-2

    lol!
    the actual setup file itself.

    (I had to clarify, could've been.....)

    Hmm, I've never seen it do this.

  21. LessBluff

    LessBluff Private E-2

    I finished installing XP (repair, rather then a fresh installation) and I was able to play sound, in Winamp, cool edit, etc. the audio controls even came back but as soon as i restarted the computer the SAME problem again.
    It goes to show that its a software problem and that all hardware is working fine.

    Where can I locate this DirectSound Driver? How can I uninstall it?

  22. LessBluff

    LessBluff Private E-2

    maybe we have different versions.
    anyway else I can get all that info? I myself would be interested to see the specs and of course understand it better.

    well, i d/l'd and installed the program (from the link provided), and at no time did it want to access the internet. i even engaged the internet lock on my firewall, to see if it would prompt me for access to the internet, but it never did. the only thing i can think of, is that you left the box "checked", to "visit lavalys web site" (screenshot below)?

    what about belarc advisor? i don't know if this one is better/worse than everest, but i think everest is more widely used?? - sos

    Well tried running it upstairs and it didn't load.
    I ran the program on this computer here (having had to give it access from my firewall) and as you can see in the screen shot its clearly connected to DriverAgent.com.

    that is not everest. what did you click when you d/l'd the program? you need to click to the right of the little flags (screenshot below). also, what is the name of the file that you d/l'd and are trying to install?

    everesthome220 <-- file name

    i'm thinking (just a guess), that you accidentally clicked on one of the sponsored ads, and got that program from there? - sos

    Just a note about the DriverAgent program, don't believe all the X's you see. That program tries to "entice" by listing drivers which "may" be updatable (in their terms), but not really necessary. (My opinion only.) Plus, to the best of my knowledge, it checks installed drivers, not missing drivers. (I haven't used it in years because of it's reporting methods.)

    It appears that your onboard sound device is enabled in the bios. If you'r running the Creative device, the onboard Intel 82801GB ICH7 should be disabled.

  30. LessBluff

    LessBluff Private E-2

    I see. How can I do that?

    As the PC starts, press one of these keys,
    (here is a list by manufacturer)http://www.michaelstevenstech.com/bios_manufacturer.htm
    Or the right key will be posted on the very first screen.
    Tap it until you enter set-up, then look for your audio (it should be in Advanced or in Integrated Peripherals)
    Make sure sound is set correctly, when finished. For Onboard Sound (Enabled) For an add-on Sound Card (Disabled)

    I was going through the manual for the motherboard http://www.fujitsu-siemens.co.uk/rl...ds/Gigabyte/GA-8I945PE/Man_GA-8I945PE_uk.pdf;

    Audio specs from the manual;
    Onboard Audio ALC880 CODEC
    Supports Jack Sensing function
    Supports 2 / 4 / 6 / 8 channel audio
    Supports Line In ; Line Out (Front Speaker Out) ; MIC ;
    Surround Speaker Out (Rear Speaker Out) ; Center/Subwoofer Speaker Out ;
    Side Speaker Out connection
    Supports SPDIF Out connection
    AUX_In

    However I couldn't find mention of the Intel 82801GB ICH7 device in the bios settings. (Integrated Peripherals or otherwise.) I also didn't see a mobo jumper for Enable/Disable. This doesn't mean it's not there, but this is as far as I got with available time so far.

    The onboard audio in BIOS would possibly be listed be listed as Azalia and may be in the PCI devices.
    I couldn't link to that manual to see exactly what choices are in the BIOS.

    I disabled Azalia (it was on AUTO), saved to CMOS, restarted the computer and STILL the same exact problem.

    "NullSoft DirectSound output error v2.47 (d) error".

  37. LessBluff

    LessBluff Private E-2

    It doesn't make sense at all.
    I uninstalled DirectSound via Winamp and reinstalled it but still the same problem.
    Is there any other known drivers for audio? apart from DirectSound?
