Trying to access the internet via browser (IE 6.0.2.2800.1106), getting a "Cannot find server or DNS error" message.

    Symptoms:
    Can ping 127.0.0.1
Can ping other members of the local area network
    Can ping the gateway
Can ping ip addresses beyond the gateway
Can FTP to/from a member of the lan running ftp server
Can http to the gateway admin console using the gateway's ip address
All other members of the lan can access beyond the gateway with no problems.
Cannot get to any site beyond the gateway via name using ping or http
Cannot get to any site beyond the gateway via ip address using http, but can get beyond the gateway with ping

I don't see your gateway address as your dns. try manually putting in your dns - either your router's address, or public dns.

  5. usmyrmss

I tried 4.2.2.1 and 4.2.2.2 and got the same results. Could ping addresses but not names. No access to addresses or names via browser.

Per you suggestion, I put the gateway address in as the DNS. Below is the ipconfig info.

With the gateway address as the DNS, I can ping both ip address and name. Still can't get browser to work via ip address or name. (Both IE and Firefox). Ping examples below.

ok, we're getting somewhere, at least. But I don't think your dns should be 4.2.2.1. I don't know where you got that from, but I'm pretty sure your isp dns is stated at your router's settings (under status).
Anyway, if you're able to ping IP's and names, you're halfway there. I see that you're using win98 on this machine, and have a wireless connection to your router. Let's put your router's ip as your WINS address (shouldn't matter, really), just in case. Make sure you download all the updates available. Log in to your router and make sure you DO have internet access rights. Wireless security section might be blocking you to surf the net. (parental control, maybe?) Also, if possible, connect your laptop directly with cat5 cable (network cable) and see what happens.

maybe a stupid question.. but does your computer's dns server info match that of the other computer's on the lan?

4.2.2.1 is the level3 dns servers, http://level3.com/ often times people are told to use them if having slow dns issues/or resolution problems.

Here's the ipconfig information for a sister workstation on the network (the one I'm using to make this post). As you can see, dns servers are the same.
