Do I need to use Sytem Restore???

Recently I had a severe problem with SwapX that Phillie PHan helped solve and did a great job of steering me through it. Every since we killed the virus I have not been able to sign onto certain sites such as Ebay, I can look at auctions but if I try to bid or sign in I get Page Cannot be Displayed. I tried downloading the Java recommended on this site but it will not download automatically or allow me to manually download it. I also cannot do a Windows update from their site, I receive an error message and when I follow the steps suggested from Microsoft it still doesn't work.

Do I need to run the recovery disc and start all over even though I will lose everything on the computer? If I do run that will it even work or will I still be in the same boat. I can run the Spybot and Adaware programs and the Trend Micro virus scan and they all show no problems on the computer. I have also tried clearing out the Cache, cookies and Internet history and settings plus added MyEbay as a trusted site and even tried lowering the security but still cannot sign in. I have also had similar problems on other "secure" sites.

    Thanks,

    THis is driving me nuts.

Also, My sound card doesn't seem to be working. If I put in a CD or DVD I can see the disc is running or watch the DVD but I cannot get any sound. I dont know if this is related but it seems to go along with everything else.

    Hi Shannon,

I doublechecked the old thread and I do not believe that we removed anything that we should not have.

    Did you install SP2?

Could this be a firewall issue?

Are you still running Norton Internet Security? See this - http://forums.ebay.co.uk/thread.jsp?forum=1004&thread=200106585&modified=1100534693591

Did you try checking IE > Tools > Internet Options > Advanced > Look where it says use SSL 2.0 and SSL 3.0 and making sure those boxes are Checked?

What are the exact error messages that you are getting from Ebay & Windows Update?

I really believe that this is an issue that we should be able to resolve. About the sound card, however, I am unsure.

I will ask a couple of the more knowledgeable members of the forum to take a look as well - Maybe they'll have an idea.

    Hang in there :)

The soundcard thing just started happening and I cant get any sound on Windows Media player, Real Player or the VAIO player.

When attempting a Windows Update I get the following error message:
    [Error number: 0x80072EFD]
It will not allow me to update Windows.

When trying to sign into Ebay I Get sent to the following page: (I get sent to this page when clicking on several sites)

    The page cannot be displayed
The page you are looking for is currently unavailable. The Web site might be experiencing technical difficulties, or you may need to adjust your browser settings.

    --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

    Please try the following:

Click the Refresh button, or try again later.

If you typed the page address in the Address bar, make sure that it is spelled correctly.

To check your connection settings, click the Tools menu, and then click Internet Options. On the Connections tab, click Settings. The settings should match those provided by your local area network (LAN) administrator or Internet service provider (ISP).
If your Network Administrator has enabled it, Microsoft Windows can examine your network and automatically discover network connection settings.
If you would like Windows to try and discover them,
    click Detect Network Settings
Some sites require 128-bit connection security. Click the Help menu and then click About Internet Explorer to determine what strength security you have installed.
If you are trying to reach a secure site, make sure your Security settings can support it. Click the Tools menu, and then click Internet Options. On the Advanced tab, scroll to the Security section and check settings for SSL 2.0, SSL 3.0, TLS 1.0, PCT 1.0.
Click the Back button to try another link.

Windows XP Service Pack 2 - Chances are, if windows updates is giving you trouble, you were probably unable to install it.

I will do a little research and try to get back to you. I also asked one of our more knowledgeable members to take a look - Perhaps he'll have an idea or two.

0x80072EFD - Cannot connect to the Internet server.

DNS Error - This may be something as well. It might be worthwhile to flush the dns cache. Try Start > Run > enter cmd > OK

Then, type: ipconfig /flushdns & hit ENTER.

When I try to play a CD or DVD this is the error message I am receiving:

    There is no sound card
You either do not have a sound card installed on your computer or it is not functioning properly. If you do not have a sound card installed, you must install one before you can listen to audio in a digital media file. If you do have a sound card installed, refer to its documentation to troubleshoot the problem.

    Error ID = 0x80040256, Remedy ID = 0x00000000

THe Computer does have a sound card and this is the first time I have had trouble with it.

    Thanks,

    Shannon

    Hi Shannon,

The Soundcard issue may be unrelated to the others and just an unfortunate coincidence.

I still believe your other issues are related to settings. I will keep trying to find more info - I'm tied up with work right now, but my tiny brain is grinding away at this. ;)

Did you try flushing the DNS cache?

I tried flushing it but it didn't seem to make a difference. I looked up the error code on Windows and it seems to be a common problem with XP and the media player. I will continue to research that problem as well, maybe one of the Windows updates made it through and corrupted it. Also, earlier I did the Java update suggested from this site but I couldn't get the new one to load. I went through the tutorial here and deleted the appropriate files and then tried downloading the java from the link supplied but it wouldn't complete the download, either manually or automatically. In automatic mode I get a Java installer window and it appears to be moving but nothing ever happens, it just sits there. If I try to download manually I get the following error message:

The Installer cannot proceed with the current internet proxy settings. Please consult instructions to complete.

Would this be associated with the other problems?

Could be related. Did you try resetting your Internet Settings to default?

Did you follow through on the error message? http://java.sun.com/j2se/1.4.2/proxy_note.html

I'll try to do some more brainstorming. However, work calls. Check back when I can.

I got the Java to download manually but it still will not let me sign into Ebay. I am due to install new anti-virus software, would it help to uninstall the Norton Internet Shield, or would it make any difference? After the installation of the Java is complete do I need to change anything or update anything?

I noticed on my Add/Remove Programs that I have a bunch of Windows XP Hotfix entries and several are labeled SP2 with a code behind each one. For Example:

    Windows XP Hotfix (SP2) Q811493

Their are 15 of these with the (SP2) and three additional WIndows XP Hotfix without the (SP2).

Also, what is the best way to disable the firewall, when I go to Norton Internet Security there is limited area to browse around. All of my Norton software is expired so my firewall may be down anyway.

    Thanks,

    Shannon

The Hotfixes are from Microsoft update. They are okay.

Are you saying you have WinXP SP2 and you have Norton Internet Security too? You may have a firewall conflict. WinXP SP2 has a firewall builtin that is enabled by default.

If I have a conflict then what is the best way to kill it? Since the Norton has expired anyway would it work if I just uninstalled the Norton Internet Security on my computer or do I need to turn off the WinXP SP2 firewall.

    Thanks,

    Shannon

OK, I uninstalled NOrton Internet Security and everything is working now. I recently purchased new anti-virus software, it is the NOrton System Works 2005, anti-spam 2005 and Personal Firewall 2005. Will I have similar issues if I install this software, or is it safe to install? IS there something better to use?

Thanks again for all your help.

I still have the audio problem. I cant play anything, DVD, CD etc. no matter what program I use. (Windows, Real Player, Jukebox etc.) When clicking on Jukebox I get an error message saying play.dll or mixer.dll is missing. Is there anything that I need to check to make sure the soundcard is turned on or would hte windows conflict cause this?

You may! It is not typically a good idea to have two firewalls running. Use one or the other.
Either disable the WinXP or the Norton Firewall. You could ask this question in the software forum too. It may be that with WinXP SP2 and new versions of Norton (2005) there is no problem.

You may need to reinstall the drivers/sofware for your sound card. You could also ask this over in the Software or maybe Hardware forums.

    Hi Shannon,

Glad you got this part resolved :) I had a feeling it was a conflict of some sort - Settings or AV/Firewall.

There are some good FREE AV products that many here prefer over Norton - AVG, AVAST, etc. . . They use far fewer resources and do a fine job.
There are also some good free personal firewalls here as well - Sygate, ZoneAlarm etc. . . Perhaps when your Norton expires you should consider these.
I also agree with Chaslang that your Sound Card issue may be better addressed in the Hardware Forum. Again, I believe that it is just an unfortunate coincidence that this occurred at the same time as the others. Of course, I reserve the right to be wrong! ;)

    Best,
