I am currently running Windows XP with service pack 2. I will be updating to service pack3 in the near future.

I have a wireless router. My main machine is connected to the router with an ethernet cable. The only wireless connection I use is for a laptop computer from my employer.

I have disabled the Windows firewall on my home computer

I have been told that my my router provides adequate protection.

Is this true or should I be downloading a Software firewall? If so which one?

There are differing views and it depends on your router setup.

Typically, I believe, routers only block incoming attempts. Software blocks both outgoing and incoming unautorized attempts to access your computer or the internet.
