I have used Instant Domain Search to verify that a name is available.

What is the best way to proceed if I want to register a name?

Are there any pitfalls or gotchas I should beware of?

This will be for a personal site and not a business site.
I'll be looking for decent free hosting.

    Thanks. :major

    Hi, mjnc.

Take a look at this thread - couple of good ideas there.

Most providers will take care of the name registration for you - just plug in the name that you want and # of years (1-5), they'll check if it's available. You'll have to pay for the name.
